국문 초록

본 연구는 조선후기 남성지식인이 남긴 유모 관련 기록들에 나타난 대리 모성에 대한 인식을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 유모의 사후에 쓰인 남성지식인들의 기록은 대체적으로 유모의 삶 가운데 자신과의 인연을 중심으로 서술되며 유모로서의 근면함이 덕성으로 강조된다. 그 가운데 드러나는 유모의 현실은 본인의 자식이나 남편과는 정서적으로 친밀한 가정을 이루지 못하고 가혹하게는 자식을 잃는 경우도 생기며, 낮은 신분과 빈곤한 경제사정으로 인해서 모성의 전이가 강제되어 보살피는 아이에게 모성을 소진하고 정성과 바람을 투사하는 것이었다. 유모의 노역을 담당하는 인물들의 이러한 행동들은 기록자에게 주인 집안의 가족 일원으로 받아들여질 수 있는 진정성으로 기억되기보다는 주인 집안에 대한 충성으로 읽혔다. 그러나 이러한 남성 지식인들의 글에서 유모에게 기대하는 자질이나 미덕과는 달리, 유모를 수유나 양육을 담당하는 대리모성으로서 사용 가능한 소유물로만 판단하지 않고, 본인과 그 가족까지 아우른 관계 속에서 모성을 가진 한 인간으로 바라보는 시선도 존재했다. 유모의 노역을 하는 여성의 실체를 그 삶의 질곡 속에서 분명하게 보고자 하는 것이다. 이러한 시선은 신분적으로나 젠더면에서 자기 목소리를 내기 힘든 대리 모성에 대한 이해를 드러낸다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of the surrogate motherhood in the records of nannies left by the male intellectuals in the late Joseon period. The records of male intellectuals written after the death of the nanny generally describe the relationship with the recorder in the life of the nanny, and the diligence as a nanny is emphasized by virtue. The reality of the nanny revealed in it is that it does not form an emotionally familiar family with the child or the husband, and the child is killed severely. And the nanny is forced to transfer maternity because of low status and poor economic circumstances, so that she exhausts maternity and projects qualities and winds to the child she cares for. These nanny behaviors are read as loyalty to the owner s family, rather than being remembered as authenticity that can be accepted as part of the employer s family. However, unlike the qualities and virtues expected from a nanny in these male intellectuals writings, a nanny is not regarded as a possession to be used as a substitute maternity for breastfeeding or nurturing, There was also a gaze in relationship with her family as a human being with maternity. This gaze reveals an understanding of the surrogate motherhood, which is difficult to give a voice in terms of status and gender.
