국문 초록

조선후기 열녀의 삶과 죽음은 남성 사대부의 열녀전을 통해 유전되었다. 여성의 언어로 여성의 삶과 죽음이 기록되지 못했다는 점에서 열녀전을 여성 문학의 범주에 모두 포섭하기는 어렵다. 그렇다고 해서 열녀전 속 여성의 삶과 죽음이 모두 헛된 것이라 간주할 수는 없다. 열녀전에서 조선후기 여성적 삶의 실체와 사대부 남성의 욕망을 분리해낼 수 있다면, 열녀전이 재현된 텍스트로서 여성문학의 범주에 포섭될 수 있을 것이다. 조선후기 남성 사대부 문인들에게 회자되었던 열녀의 대표는 평민 출신의 향랑이었다. 다수의 문인들이 향랑 이야기를 입전하였는데 이들 남성은 처음에는 향랑 이야기의 사실성을 강조하는 경향을 보여주었지만 점차 사실성을 탈각시켜 낭만적 이야기로 윤색하기 시작했다. 낭만적 색채를 띠게 된 향랑전에서 여성적 삶의 실체는 사라지고 허구의 분식을 통해 비극적 정조만 남게 된다. 열녀에게 덧씌워진 낭만성은 남성의 욕망이 투사된 결과로 볼 수 있다. 남성은 여성의 삶과 죽음조차도 남성적 방식으로 전유한다. 열녀전은 남성의 욕망이 여성에게 투사된 결과물인 것이다. 남성 사대부들은 순절한 여성을 열녀로 칭송했지만 정작 죽은 여성은 대를 이을 자식을 기를 수도, 남겨진 부모를 모실 수도 없다. 이에 조선후기 남성 사대부들은 살아있는 열녀의 이미지를 만들어냄으로써 남겨진 아이와 부모를 여성이 부양하도록 그 책임을 전가하였다. 가부장제를 유지하기 위해 열녀로부터 죽음을 소거한 것이다. 또한 남성 사대부는 여성이 남편에 대해 의리를 다하기를 바라기도 한다. 조선후기 열녀는 남성을 위해 복수를 하는 한편 남편의 장례를 위해 고난을 기꺼이 감수하는 면모를 보여준다. 이처럼 열녀전은 여성으로서의 실존과 투사된 남성의 욕망이 공존하는 텍스트로서 면밀히 음미되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

In late Joseon Period, the life and death of virtuous women had reported by gentry males. In the sense that the life and death of women have not been recorded by women’s language, it is difficult to embrace the category of women literature. Nonetheless the life and death of women in the biographies of virtuous woman cannot be regarded a falsehood. If it can be separated from the desire of manhood in the patriarchy, the story of virtuous woman is able to be interpreted as a woman literature. A heroic virtuous woman in late Joseon Period was Hyangrang. Many male intellectuals had written Hyangrang’s story. Initially they tended to emphasize the authenticity of Hyangrang’s virtuous death, but gradually embroider her story a romantic affair by the elimination of the truth. The story of Hyangrang colored by romantic moods remained a tragical fiction through ornamentations of fabrication. As a romantic woman of virtue, the aspect was the effect of masculine desire’s projection. Male intellectuals praised virtuous women’s death. But the dead woman of virtue never be able to raise their children or to enshrine their parents. Thus male intellectuals in late Joseon period made an image of the virtuous woman of life. This is an elimination of the virtuous woman’s death for masculine desire. In addition male intellectuals hope women’s fidelity. It’s like virtuous women’s enduring hardships for her husband’s funeral. The story of virtuous women in late Joseon Period is a text of the feminine reality coexistenced with masculine desire.
