여귀(女鬼) 서사의 한 양상에 대하여

국문 초록

이 논문은 17세기 중반~18세기 중반에 생산된 ‘득옥 이야기’의 전개 양상과 성격에 대해 연구한 것이다. 이 이야기는 『국당배어(菊堂俳語)』, 『이순록(二旬錄)』, 『성호사설(星湖僿說)』, 『청죽만록(聽竹漫錄)』 등에 각기 다른 버전으로 실려 있다. 득옥(得玉)은 인평대군(麟坪大君)의 저택에 출몰했다고 전해지는 여귀(女鬼)이다. 기생 출신으로 인평궁의 시비(侍婢)가 된 득옥이 죽음에 이르는 과정, 그 후 득옥 귀신이 일으키는 기이한 사건들이 서사의 주요 내용이다. 득옥의 죽음은 남성지배구조에서의 남성들의 성적 억압과 여성들의 질투에 의한 것이다. 억울하게 죽은 득옥은 직접 해원, 즉 복수에 나서고, 그가 일으키는 소동이나 피해의 규모가 커서 사람들의 주목을 받는다. 제시한 자료들은 여성 귀신이라는 타자의 형상을 보여준다. 이방인이자 출신이 미천한 득옥의 처지가 사건의 발단이 되고, 득옥 귀신의 불온함이나 공격성이 부각된다. 귀신의 원한을 풀어주는 과정이 없거나 불충분하여 문제가 해결되지 않으며, 이에 따라 귀신은 인평대군 집안에 지속적으로 복수하는 것으로 그려진다. 텍스트 간에는 시차가 있으며, 이야기의 결구도 다르다. 가장 앞서 기록된 『국당배어』의 자료는 원한을 품은 여귀 이야기의 기본적인 형태이며, 그 결말은 인평대군 부부를 병들어 죽게 만드는 데 한정된다. 그러나 이보다 70여 년 이후에 지어진 『이순록』과 『청죽만록』, 『성호사설』에서는 득옥 귀신으로 인한 괴변(怪變)이 일어난 뒤 인평대군 가문 전체가 몰락하는 것으로 서술된다. 즉 멸문(滅門)의 동기로서 득옥이라는 불온한 타자가 설정된 것이다. 이것은 경신대출척(庚申大黜陟) 등 실제 역사적 사건과 관련된 것으로, 득옥 서사와 인평대군가의 멸문이 연결되어 귀신담이 재해석되고 재생산된 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper researches the features and developmental aspects of Female Ghost Deuk-ok s Story produced in the middle of 17th century-middle of 18th century. This story is published in 『Gukdangbaeuh(菊堂俳語)』, 『Eesunlok(二旬錄)』, 『Seonghosaseol(星湖僿說)』, and 『Cheongjukmanrok(聽竹漫錄)』 in different versions. Deuk-ok(得玉) is a female ghost appearing in the house of Prince Inpyeong(麟坪大君) who is the third son of Injo(仁祖), the 16th King of Joseon Dynasty. The main contents of Deuk-ok s story include the death of Deuk-ok who became a servant of the house as a gisaeng and mysterious incidents caused by a ghost Deuk-ok. Deuk-ok s death was caused by men s sexual suppression and women s jealousy. As Deuk-ok was dead under a false accusation, she appeared as a ghost. As the commotion or damage caused by the ghost was huge, it grabbed people s attention. The suggested data shows the form of a female ghost. The position of Deuk-ok as a stranger sparked off the incident while the improperness or aggression of a ghost Deuk-ok was emphasized. Because of no/insufficient process of solving the ghost s grudge, the ghost is continuously revenging herself on Prince Inpyeong s family. These points are different from other ghost stories of the late Joseon Dynasty. However, there are time differences in the period of writing these texts, and the ends of stories are also different. As the earliest data, 『Gukdangbaeuh』 is in the basic form of a female ghost story with grudge, and its end is limited to the death of Prince Inpyeong and his wife from disease. However, in 『Eesuklok』, 『Cheongjukmanrok』, and 『Seonghosaseol』 that were created about 70 years later, the whole family of Prince Inpyeong is collapsed after a strange incident by a ghost Deuk-ok. Related to the actual historical event like Gyeongsindaechulcheok(庚申大黜陟) ;, the ghost story is reinterpreted and reproduced in the connection between the appearance of ghost Deuk-ok and extermination of Prince Inpyeong s whole family. The extermination of an influential family is explained in the connection with a ghost story.
