국문 초록

이 글은 여성 문학사에서 지속되어 온 문제-시야에서 사라진 여성의 글/쓰기를 어떻게 가시화할 것인가, 여성의 지적인 노동을 여성주의 관점에서 어떻게 조명할 것인가-를 논의의 대상으로 삼는다. 남성 중심의 문학 정전에서 여성이 오랫동안 배제되었다는 인식은 이미 널리 공유되고 있으며, 여성의 잃어버린 문학적 유산을 회복하는 일이 비단 근세 시대 문학이나 영국 문학에 국한된 문제도 아니다. 그러나 근세 시대 영국 여성의 글/쓰기는 텍스트와 문맥의 관계, 생산과 수용 및 재생산의 관계, 젠더와 장르의 관계, 여성의 삶, 관점, 저술을 형성하는 역사적 특성들, 초기 출판문화와 현대 디지털 재생산 시대에서 필사본의 위치, 변화하는 저자성, 권위, 장르의 개념 등 여성주의 비평가들이 고심하는 대표적 문제를 점검할 수 있는 유의미한 현장을 제공한다. 이러한 문제에 대해 답하려는 노력으로 이 글은 먼저 기존 문학 비평에서 여전히 잘 포착되지 않은 근세 시대 영국 여성의 글/쓰기 속성을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 근세 시대 여성의 글/쓰기를 여성주의적 입장에서 재생산하는 과정에 개입하는 이론적, 실천적 도전에 대해 짚어보고자 한다. 이 글의 후반부는 두 가지 질문에 대해 집중적으로 살펴본다. 근세 시대 여성의 글/쓰기와 지적 노동이 갖는 특징을 살린 채 가시화할 방법은 무엇인가? 근세 시대 여성의 글/쓰기에 대해 역사적 민감성과 세밀함을 갖춘 여성주의 연구를 양성하는데 디지털 아카이브가 기여할 방안은 무엇인가?

영문 초록

This essay tackles perennial questions in women’s literary history: how to make visible women’s writing that has fallen into oblivion; how to bring into focus women’s intellectual labors from a feminist point of view. It is a critical commonplace that women have long been excluded from the canon or national literature because the body of the literary canon is male-centered. While the question of how to recuperate women’s long lost literary legacy is not limited either to the early modern period or to British literature, early modern British women’s writing offers a meaningful site from which to engage various issues feminist critics grapple with: the complex relationship between text and context, production, reception, and reproduction, as well as gender and genre; the historical differences that shaped early modern women’s lives, perspectives, and writing exercises; the status of manuscript in nascent print culture and in the age of digital reproduction; changing notions of authorship, authority, and genre. To answer these questions, this essay first examines the nature of early modern British women’s writing that has remained underrepresented in modern literary criticism. In so doing, I address some important theoretical and practical challenges to be considered in feminist reconstruction of early modern women’s writing. The rest of the essay attempts to answer two questions: in what ways can early modern women’s writing and intellectual labors be made visible without losing their characteristics, and how might digital archives serve to cultivate a more nuanced and historically oriented feminist study of early modern women’s writing?
