談遷의 ‘天’에 대한 관점

국문 초록

담천은 명말청초 역사가로 역사서 『국각(國榷)』을 저술했다. 담천은 『국각』에서 ‘천(天)’에 대해 언급했다. 따라서 담천의 사학사상을 이해하려면 담천의 천에 대한 관점을 이해해야 한다. 본문은 담천의 사학사상을 이해하기 위한 일환으로 『국각』에 나타난 천의 관점을 크게 천명관(天命觀), 천문관(天文觀), 점복관(占卜觀)으로 구분하여 검토하였다. 먼저 천명관에서 담천이 역사상의 인물들을 기술하면서, 이들의 승패와 길흉에 초월적인 힘이 작용하고 있다는 인식에 대해 고찰했다.다음으로 천문관에서 담천이 월식, 일식, 별의 움직임 등 각종 천문현 상과 가뭄, 홍수, 지진, 태풍, 우박 등 각종 자연현상을 기술하면서, 이들 현상이 인사의 변화에 영향을 준다는 인식에 대해 검토했다. 마지 막으로 점복관에서 담천이 역사 속의 여러 인물들을 기술하면서, 그들의 생활에 점복이 영향을 주고 있다는 점에 대해 살펴보았다. 검토한 결과 담천은 천의 존재와 역량에 대해 확고한 믿음을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있고, 또한 그의 역사서는 이러한 사상을 바탕으로 저술되었음을 알 수 있다. 한편으로 담천은 천을 중시하고 있지만, 실제 적으로는 인사(人事)를 더 중시하고 있다. 담천은 비록 역사상의 승패 득실, 길흉화복에 분명히 천이 내재하고 있지만, 그 이면에는 인사가 바탕이 되어, 소위 ‘진인사대천명(盡人事待天命)’해야 하는 것으로, 만약 인사가 충분하지 못하다면 천을 논할 수 없다고 여겼다. 결국 담천의 역사인식에서 천인(天人)사이의 관계는 분리할 수 있는 것이 아니라, 천인양자의 존재를 인정하는 바탕위에 인사를 다해야 하는 것으로 보고 있다.

영문 초록

Tan Qian is a famous historian who wrote the history book titled, “Guoque.” Tan Qian mentioned “heaven” in his book, Guoque. In order to understand the historiography of Guoque, it is necessary to understand his perspective of “heaven”. To understand the Tan Qian’s abstraction on history, this article examined the perspective of “heaven” in Guoque by dividing it into the concepts of “mandate of heaven”, “patterns of heaven”, and “divination”. At first, regarding the “mandate of heaven”, I reviewed the Tan Quin’s perception, which was shown through the depiction of some historical characters which seemed the transcendental power was acting on their victory and fortune. Next, I examined various natural phenomena such as droughts, floods, earthquakes, typhoons, hail, and other various astronomical phenomena such as lunar eclipses, solar eclipse and star movements regarding the concept of the “patterns of heaven”. Lastly, for the “divination”, I examined that Tan Quin describes for various historical figures the divination affects their lives As a result, it can be seen that Tan Quin had a firm belief in the existence and competence of “heaven” and his history book is based on this concept. On the other hand, although Tan Quin emphasizes the heaven, in practice, he emphasizes human affairs even more. Tan Quin recognized that even though it is clearly true that theheaven affects our victory and fortune, but behind all this, all of our lives are based on the human affairs as “the Heaven helps those who help themselves.” That is, he believes that before discussing the heaven, we should sufficiently discuss the matters concerning human affairs. As a result, in his perspective on history, the relationship between the heaven and human is not separable, but rather the existence and effects of both the heaven and human should be acknowledge and considered.
