아버지 생루이(1214-1270)가 딸 이자벨 에게 주는 「가르침들 Enseignements」 연구

국문 초록

프랑스의 왕 생루이(Saint Louis, 1214-1270)는 아들 필립(Philippe) 과 딸 이자벨(Isabelle)에게 각각 「가르침들 Enseignements」이라는 글을 써 남겼다. 생루이의 친구이자 신하였던 죠앵빌(Joinville)은 『생루 이의 생애 The Life of Saint Louis』에서 생루이가 죽음을 목전에 두고 아들 필립을 불러 「가르침들」을 주며 지키기를 명했다고 썼다. 그래서이 「가르침들」은 일명 <생루이의 유언 Saint Louis’s Testament>이라 불리기도 한다. 그러나 죠앵빌은 십자군 원정에 동행하지도 않았다. 이 장면은 죠앵빌의 상상력의 산물이라고 할 수 있다. 이 글은 아버지인 군주 생루이가 사랑하는 자녀들을 위하여 기록한 일종의 「군주의 거울(mirror for princes)」이다. 그리고 그 작성 시기는 생루이가 자신의 마지막이 된 제8차 십자군 원정을 떠나기 전으로 보는 것이 정설이다. 아들 필립에게 준 「가르침들」과 딸 이자벨에게 준 「가르침들」은 흥미로운 차이를 보여준다. 생루이가 아들 필립에게 준 「가르침들」은 <군주의 거울>에 합당한 내용을 가지고 있다. 먼저 생루이는 그리스 도교 신앙 위에 굳건히 서서, 모든 종교적 모든 의무를 다하라는 것을 가르친다. 그리고 이어 아들에게 신하들의 조언을 경청하고, 평화를 추구하라는 군주의 통치학에 해당하는 내용을 가르친다. 이와 비교해 보았을 때, 딸 이자벨에게 준 「가르침들」에서 생루이는 딸에게 그리스 도교 신앙을 굳게 지킬 것과 모든 종교적 의무를 다할 것에 대해서는 거의 똑같은 당부의 말을 한다. 그러나 딸에게 주는 「가르침들」에서 생루이는 특히 인내심과 긍휼한 마음, 적선 등의 도덕적 가치와 선행을 강조한다. 그리고 이어 딸에게 가정안의 여성의 문제를 전담하고, 그들을 신앙적으로 도덕적으로 선도하는 책임이 있음을 가르친다. 또순종의 미덕과 사치를 삼갈 것, 검소할 것 등의 도덕적이고 교훈적인 가르침을 더한다. 이 두 「가르침들」의 비교를 통해 우리는 아버지 생루이와 그 시대의 남성중심주의적 사고와 여성에 대한 차별적인 생각을 볼 수 있다. 이 「가르침들」에는 아버지 생루이의 부정이 여실히 표현되어 있다. 가정을 소중히 생각하고, 자녀들에 대한 따뜻한 사랑을 보여주는 한아버지의 모습이 뚜렷이 새겨져있다. 아울러 생루이가 딸에게 준 「가 르침들」은 중세의 한 따뜻한 아버지의 모습과 함께 서양 중세이후 현대까지 지속되는 여성에 대한 차별적인 사고의 한 양상도 보여준다.

영문 초록

Louis IX (1214-1270), commonly known as Saint Louis, King of medieval France, wrote “Enseignments (teachings)” to his son Philippe and his daughter Isabelle. In “The Life of Saint Louis,” Joinville, a friend and courtier of Saint Louis, mentioned that Saint Louis with his last breath called his son Philip and gave him “Enseignements” to guard for rest of his life. So these “Enseignements” are also called “Saint Louis’s Testament.” However, Joinville did not even join the Crusade expedition. This scene is a product of his imagination. This article is a kind of “mirror for princes”, written by the father, Saint Louis, for the children he loved. And it is correct to reason that Saint Louis had written this before he departed for the 8th Crusade, which took his life. His “Enseignements” to his son Philip and to his daughter Isabelle showed interesting differences. The “Enseignements” written tohis son Philippe contained something befitting to the “Mirror for Princes.” First, Saint Louis teaches Philippe to stand firmly on Christian faith and fulfill all religious obligations. Then he teaches him to listen to the advice of his subjects and seek peace under the monarch rules. In comparison, in the “Enseignements” given to his daughter Isabelle, Saint Louis tells her almost the same thing on firmly keeping her Christian faith and fulfilling all her religious obligations. However, he emphasizes moral values and good deeds, especially patience, and compassion in his “Enseignements” to his daughter. He then teaches her that she is in charge of the women’s problems within home and responsible in leading them morally and faithfully. He also adds moral and didactic teachings, such as the virtue of obedience, avoiding extravagance, being frugal, and so on. Through a comparison of these two “Enseignements,” we can see the difference between Saint Louis as a father and the male-centric and female discriminatory thinking of that era. These “Enseignements” clearly express the paternal love of Father Saint Louis.The image of a father who cares for his family and the love for his children are clearly marked here. In addition, Saint Louis’s “Enseignements” show a warmth of the fatherhood in the Middle Ages, as well as some aspects of discrimination towards women that have continued since the Middle Ages to the modern times.
