『주역』의 생명철학으로 보는 ‘생명 존중’에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

오늘날 팬데믹, 전쟁, 영아살해 등 일어나는 많은 현상들을 바라보며 생명 경시의 심각성과 더불어 생명 가치에 대하여 다시금 깨닫게 되는 지금이다. ‘생명 가치’라는 말에는 ‘생명 존중’이라는 의미가 들어 있다. ‘생명 존중’이란 살아 있는 모든 것을 귀하게 여기고 모든 생명에 가치를 부여하는 사상이다. 생명에 대한 존중은 자연스럽게 생명에 대한 두려움으로 이어지는데 이것을 ‘생명경외(生命敬畏)’ 또는 ‘생명외경(生命畏敬)’이라 한다. 생명이란 더없이 소중한 것이며 온전하게 보호받아야 마땅하지만 인류는 미숙하여 본연한 삶의 자세를 지키지 못하고 생명을 경시하거나 손상시키는 일이 허다하다. 생명존중사상에 대하여 『주역』에서는 ‘생생사상(生生思想)’으로 소명한다. 생생은 ‘살고 사는 것’이다. 『주역』은 이 세상과 우주 전체를 시작도 끝도 없는 하나의 영원한 순환으로 이해하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 『주역』의 십익(十翼) 가운데 하나인 「계사전」을 중점으로 생명철학의 구조를 살펴본다. 「계사전」에서는 천지건곤(天地乾坤)의 교감(交感)과 음양합덕(陰陽合德)을 바탕으로 ‘낳고 또 낳는’다는 생생불식(生生不息)의 순환적 과정을 밝히고 있다. 「계사전」에 담긴 건도(乾道)와 곤도(坤道)의 생명 원리와 이간(易簡)의 이치, ‘성성(成性)’을 통한 도의(道義)의 실천, 귀신(鬼神)의 실상과 생명 순환 작용이라는 철학적 개념 분석을 토대로 우주 생명의 본질과 원리는 무엇이며, 어떻게 변화하고 순환되어 가는지에 대하여 고찰한다. 나아가 현대사회에서 벌어지는 생명과 관련한 사회적 문제들에 대해 『주역』에서 보이는 생명철학의 역할 가능성과 의의를 살펴보고 생명 경시에서 생명 존중으로 나아가는 길을 모색하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Nowadays, phenomenons such as pandemic, war, infanticide, etc. make us realize the severity of disregards-for-life and the importance of value-of-life. The term life-value includes the meaning of respect-for-life. Respect-for-life is an idea that values all living things and gives value to all life. Respect for life naturally leads to fear of life, which is called ‘reverence-for-life’ or ‘fear-for-life’. Life is extremely precious and deserves to be fully protected, but humanity is immature and often fails to maintain its natural attitude towards life and neglects or damages life. In 『Zhouyì』, the idea of respect-for-life is described as ‘Ceaseless Production(生生)’. 『Zhouyì』 understands the world and the entire universe as an eternal cycle with no beginning or end. Ceaseless Production(生生) means living and living. In this study, the structure of life philosophy is discussed focusing on 「Gyesajeon」, one of Ten Wings(十翼) of 『Zhouyì』. In 「Gyesajeon」, the cyclical process of Ceaseless Production(生生不息), in other words ‘birth and birth again’, is revealed based on the communion of heavenandearth-QianKun(天地乾坤) and Virtuous Concordance of Yin and Yang(陰陽合德). The study also reviews the essence and principles of life in the universe and how it changes and circulates based on the life principles of Qiando(乾道) and Kundo(坤道) and the principles of Yi-jian(易簡) from 「Gyesajeon」, the practice of Doeui(道義) through Cheng-seong (成性), the reality of gwisin(鬼神), and an analysis of the philosophical concept of life circulation. Furthermore, the role and significance of life philosophy from 『Zhouyì』 were considered in regards to social issues related to life occurring in modern society and the way to move from disregards-for-life to Respect-for-life was suggested.
