‘조선인 사형수’를 둘러싼 전유의 구도 * : 고마쓰가와 사건(小松川事件)과 일본/‘조선’

국문 초록

이 논문은 1950년대 후반부터 60년대 초에 일본사회를 떠들썩하게 한 ‘고 마쓰가와 사건’과 그 범인으로 체포된 소년사형수 이진우를 둘러싼 일본사 회, 재일조선인사회, 한국사회의 반응과 개입과정을 살펴봤다. 이진우의 면모는 재일조선인 저널리스트 박수남과의 옥중서한을 통해 세상에 알려졌다. 철학과 종교, 문학과 사회과학을 폭넓 게 섭렵하는 그의 감수성과 성숙함은 일본지식인들의 문학적, 사상적 관심을 끌기에 충분했다. 일본 지식인들은 이진우 구명운동을 벌리는 한편, 그를 사상적 사유의 대상으로 삼았다. 스즈키 미치히코는 서간집에 나타난 소년의 강렬한 개성, 민족을 둘러싼 박수남 과의 숨죽이는 듯한 엇갈림을 접하면서 이진우에게서 커다란 사상사적 의의를 발견하였고 오시마 나기사는 이진우의 존재를 정치적으로 재현하여 국가권력을 향한 성스러운 ‘대항자’로 승화시켰다. 그 반면 이 사건을 통해 일본사회의 시선에 노출된 재일조선인들은 대처할 방법 없는 어두운 초조 속에서 이 사건을 내버려둘 수밖에 없었다. 또한 이북 으로의 ‘귀국’을 통한 조국건설에 희망을 찾은 60년대 초 재일조선인사회에 있어 이진우는 부인해야 할 또 하나의 자화상이었다. 이진우를 둘러싼 방어 와 부인, 복권과 망각은 현재까지도 재일조선인들이 끌어안는 실존적 물음으로 남아있다. 또 한국사회에서도 잔잔한 구명운동이 벌어지고 있었는데 종교적 인간애와 휴머니즘을 내세우는 한국사회의 관심은 상당히 한정적이었 다. 이 논문에서는 이진우를 둘러싼 일본인, 재일조선인, 한국인들의 전유와 부인의 과정을 통해 이들의 지향점을 당시 정치적 맥락 속에서 검증하여 그들 사이의 접속의 흔적과 엇갈림을 부각시키고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how differently Japanese society, zainichi Koreans, and South Korean society responded to and intervened with the Komatsugawa Incident, in which the culprit, later sentenced to death, turned out a zainich boy named Lee Jinwoo who caused controversy all over the Japan in the late 50s to the early 60s. Lee Jinwoo s story came to be widely known to the public through his correspondence with Pak Soonam, a zainichi journalist. The boy s refined and mature sensibility embracing philosophy, religion, literature and even social science drew attention from Japanese intellectuals, who were engaged with the campaign to save his life and appropriated him as an object of intellectual thoughts. For example, Suzuki Michihiko compared Lee s intense individuality and subtlety with that of Pak Soonam on the topic of nation and tempted to endow Lee with an intellectual significance. Oshima Nagisa interpreted Lee s being politically and sublimated him as a sacred “rebel” against the state power. On the other hand, through exposure to the Japanese gaze,Zainichi Koreans in Japan could not but remain helpless without knowing how to cope with the incident. Or Lee s case was thought to be another self-portrait to be disavowed by the zainichi Koreans who hoped a collective repatriation to North Korea in the ‘60s. At present, Zainichi Koreans have been haunted by existential questions from experiencing defense, disavowal, restoration and forgetting what Lee s case brought about. Interest directed to Lee s case from Korean society remained very restricted. Mostly, they were involved with a life-saving campaign from a religious and humanistic perspective. In this paper, by looking at how differently Japanese, zainichi Koreans, and South Koreans appropriated and disavowed the case of Lee Jinwoo, I aimed to examine distinct orientations of the three communities in the context of the politics of those days and highlight how they were related and simultaneously divorced from one another.
