冊契로 본 17 세기 南人들의 상업출판

국문 초록

왕조는 개국 초기부터 출판을 중시했다. 특히 금속활자를 이용한 출판은 조선 왕조가 자랑하는 출판시스템의 핵심이었다. 그러나 임진왜란을 거치면서 그 출판시스템은 붕괴되었고, 학자들조차 서적을 구하기는 힘든 상황이 되고 말았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 전쟁을 치르느라 재정이 파탄에 이른 정부는 출판에 힘을 쏟을 겨를이 없었다. 그러자 훈련도감에서는 목활자를 만들어 책을 인쇄하고 판매도 하였다. 일종의 書肆를 운영한 것이다. 그러자 사대부들도 冊契를 조직하여 서적을 간행하기 시작했다. 책계를 통해 상업출판을 시도한 것이다. 하지만 책계에 관해서는 기록만 남아 있고 실증 적인 자료는 없었다. 이번에 소개하는 계첩 에는 南人들이 만든 책계의 명단과 결성 과정이 담겨 있다. 이를 통해서 책계가 신편휘어 를 간행하여 유통시키기 위해 결성되었으며, 상업출판의 성격을 지닌 조직임을 확인할수 있었다. 책계는 조선후기 출판을 이해하는 중요한 시스템이다. 관 중심의 출판이 상업출판의 성격을 지닌 민간출판으로 그 주체가 변모되어 가는 상황을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다. 아울러 책계는 조선후기 권력자들이 출판의 중심이 되는 과정을 이해하는 데 아주 중요한 단서가 된다.

영문 초록

The Joseon dynasty emphasized publishing from the beginning of the country. Especially, the publication using metal type was the core of the publishing system of the Joseon Dynasty. However, the publishing system collapsed following the Japanese invasion of Korea, and even scholars became hard to find books. Nevertheless, the government, which has suffered financial ruin because of the war, has no desire to concentrate on publishing. Then, Hunryeondogam (訓練都監, military camp that defended capital city during the Joseon dynasty), he made a wooden type and printed and sold books. They operated a kind of bookshop. Then scholarbureaucrat organized the “Chaeggye”(冊契, a social group organized to publish books) and began publishing books. They attempted commercial publishing through this group. However, there was no empirical data on the Chaeggye. This time I introduced the “Gyecheop(契帖)” that contain the members list and the formation process of the “Chaeggye” organized by the “Namin(南人, one of the political groups in late Joseon dynasty)”. Through this, we were able to confirm that the Chaeggye was formed to publish and distribute the “Sinpyeonhwieo”(新編彙語) and has the character of commercial publication. The Chaeggye is an important system for understanding the late Joseon dynasty publishing. It can be seen that the government-centered publishing is transforming itself into a private publication with the nature of commercial publishing. In addition, the Chaeggye is a very important clue in understanding the process by which power becomes a center of publication.
