야담을 통해 본 역사적 트라우마로서 병자호란의 기억과 그 서사적 대응

국문 초록

본고는 병자호란의 기억이 야담 속에 어떻게 형상화되었는가를 역사적 트라우마와 그 서사적 대응이라는 관점에서 살펴본 것이다. 병자호란은 오랜 시간이 지나서도 조선 사회에 정신적 상흔으로 남았다는 점에서 일반적인트라우마와 다른, 역사적 트라우마라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 역사적 트라우마의 극복을 위해 사회 문화적으로 다양한 시도가 이루어졌으며, 이는 자연스레 야담에도 영향을 미쳤다. 먼저, 병자호란을 예견하거나, 막고자 했던 인물들의 이야기가 있다. 그러나 야담 속에서 이인들의 예견이나 방비는 언제나 실패로 돌아가고 전쟁은발발한다. 즉, 병자호란은 하늘이 정한 운명이므로 인간의 힘으로 바꿀 수 없는 일이었다는 운명론적 인식과 체념의 정서가 반영된 것이다. 병자호란 이후흐트러진 민심을 수습하고, 이전의 사회질서를 다시금 공고하게 만들기 위해이념을 강조하고 절의의 가치를 선양하고자 하는 서사적 대응은 주로 열녀담,절의담 등을 통해 드러난다. 역사적 서술과 달리 야담에서 편찬자들은 허구적인 이야기를 통해 절의를 강조하고 트라우마 극복을 시도하였다. 마지막으로,18세기 중반의 시대적 흐름 속에서 병자호란 및 청을 객관적으로 바라보고자하는 움직임이 야담 속에도 드러난다. 청과 청나라 황제에 대한 야사와 북벌의 허상에 대한 비판적인 이야기가 그것이다. 이러한 이야기들을 통해 단순한 역사적 사실로서 병자호란 기억의 재현이아니라 역사적 트라우마 극복을 위한 서사적 대응으로서의 나름의 모색이 야담 속에서 다양하게 이루어졌음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how memories over Byeongjahoran were embodied within historical tales in the perspective of healing and overcoming historic trauma. It can be said that Byeongjahoran is historic trauma different from other types of trauma in that it was left as mental wounds in Chosun society even after a long period. Also, to get over that historic trauma, attempts were made socially as well as culturally. This coping discourse naturally influenced yadam, too. First of all, there are tales about figures who try to predict or prevent Byeongjahoran. In those stories, their prediction or prevention all went into failure, and the war occurred after all. It reflects the people’s recognition and sentiment of resignation that Byeongjahoran was doomed to happen and could not be avoided by men’s power. After Byeongjahoran, to get rid of the disturbed national state of mind and solidify social order like before, narrative response was tried for stressing ideology and elevating the value of integrity, and this was shown mainly through yeolnyeodam and jeoluidam. Unlike historic narrative, in yadam, compilers emphasized integrity and tried to get over trauma through fictional stories. Lastly, within the trends of the mid-18th century, the movement to view Byeongjahoran and Qing objectively was revealed in yadam, too. These are mainly the critical stories about the absurdity of bukbeol and historical tales about Qing. Through these yadam, we can see that the works are not about reproducing the memories of Byeongjahoran merely as historical facts but about looking for something as narrative coping to get over that historic trauma.
