영문 초록

This paper examines the types of explicitation in literary texts translated from Korean to English. Explicitation is a universal strategy inherent in the process of translation. Optional explicitation is triggered by differences in stylistic preferences between Korean and English. Cohesive features in English reflect a stronger need for clarity than Korean. Pragmatic explicitation is triggered by differences between cultures. In order to convey the implicit cultural information in the source language, a translator adds more detailed information to make it easier for the target reader. It is difficult to mediate the levels of explicitation because there are many potential obstacles in any given literary text. Since literary translation should be satisfied with the source text author as well as the target text reader, a translator makes adjustments to maintain ideal level of explicitiation.
