발해의 교통·관방체계 복원을 위한 예비작업

국문 초록

교통•관방체계는 외교 및 무역로 뿐만 아니라 조세시스템 등과 연계되어 해석될 수 있기 때문에 지방통치제도나 주변 정치체와의 근린관계 복원을 위해서는 반드시 선결되어야 하는 연구주제이다. 발해의 교통•관방체계는 고구려의 그것을 기초로 조직되었을 것으로 막연하게 추정되어져 왔지만 관방유적들이 구체적으로 어떻게 기능하였는지 교통로의 실제 노정(路程)은 어떠하였을지에 대한 접 근은 이루어지지 못했다. 기존연구들이 문헌기록에 의존하여 유적기능을 해석하거나 유적분포도 작 성을 통해 교통로를 가늠해 보는 정도의 수준에서 이루어졌기 때문이다. 이러한 문제는 발해의 영토가 광대하여 연구주제별로 적정한 해상도를 가지는 분석단위를 설정하기 어렵고 유적기능이나 노정을 구체적으로 검토하기 위한 방법론의 개발이 부재했던 부분에서 야기된 것이다. 필자들은 발해의 교통•관방체계에 대한 복원을 위해서는 경관고고학적인 관점에서 논의를 진행시킬 필요가 있다고 판단하고 계량지리학 분야에서 활용되고 있는 GIS를 이용해 연해주 지역 의 관방유적에 대한 가시권 분석을 실시하였다. 분석을 통해 이 지역을 통과했던 고대 교통 로의 일부 노선과 관방유적이 존재했을 가능성이 높은 지역을 추정해 보았으며 연해주 동• 남부 지역에서 내륙으로 연결되는 열수선(列燧線)과 지역 방어에 이용되었을 관방체계의 존재도 타진해 볼 수 있었다. 향후, 발굴 및 지표조사 등을 통해 지속적으로 연구결과가 검증되고 분석방법을 개선시켜 나간다면 중세 연해주 지역의 교통•관방체계를 복원하는 연구에 있어 의미있는 기여를 할 수 있을 것이라 생각된다.

영문 초록

Since the traffic and defense outpost system could be related with diplomatic and trade routes as well as tax system, it must be studied in advance to restore local ruling(government) system or polities. Although it has been estimated that the traffic and defense outpost system of the Balhae had been based on those of Goguryeo, there have been less approaches to the actual function or routes in detail. This is because of the existing studies were conduct¬ed only to assume the function of remains or the routes of traffic, relying on the litera¬ture records or the maps of remains. These problems were caused by the difficulties of deciding the analysis unit due to the vast territory of the Balhae and the lack of meth¬odology. In this article, we analyzed the visibility range of the defense outpost remains in the Primorye with GIS which is used in quantitative geography field, to restore the traffic and defense outpost system of the Balhae in the perspective of Landscape Archeology. Through the analysis, we assumed the presence area of the traffic routes and the de¬fense outpost remains. Consequently, we could find the links of beacon hills from the southeast to the interior area of the Primorye and the existence of the defense outpost system. This study will contribute to restore the traffic and defense outpost system in the middle age of the Primorye province, if more excavations and survey could be done with the improvement of the method of analysis.
