영어 교사의 교사 역할에 대한 자기 인식 조사 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 영어 교사가 수업 내용의 제공자, 영어 발음과 표현에 대한 모델, 그리고 교수-학습 방법의 수행자로서 자신의 역할에 대해 얼마나 긍정적으로 인식하고, 그러한 역할을 학습자는 어떻게 받아들고 있다고 인식하는지 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 전국적으로 초등교사 40명과 중등교사 123명을 대상으로 설문을 실시한 후학교급별과 지역별로 응답 경향을 알아보기 위해 결과를 백분율로 분석하였다. 설문 분석 결과 첫째, 일부 문항에서 응답 결과가 학교급이나 지역적으로 차이를 보이고 있지만, 대부분의 초, 중등학교 영어 교사들은 수업과 관련하여 교사가 무엇을 어떻게 가르쳐야 하고, 수업 중 어떤 역할을 수행해야 하는지에 대해 충분히 인식하고 있었다. 둘째, 대부분의 영어 교사들은 자신의 영어 발음이나 수업 중 사용하는 영어 표현이 학습에 모델로서 사용된다는 점과 학생들이 교사의 수업 내용이나 방법을 잘따르고 있다고 인식하고 있었다. 셋째, 교사들이 가지고 있는 수업 중 자신의 역할이나 수업에 적용하는 교수 활동에 대해 학생들의 수용 여부를 인식하는 정도에 있어 서는 학교급 간 약간 차이가 있지만, 대부분 교사들은 학생들이 자신들이 제공하는 학습 내용이나 방법을 잘 받아들인다고 인식하였다. 이러한 조사 결과로 미루어 볼때, 우리나라 영어 교사교육이 교사에게 수업 중 어떤 역할을 수행하며 어떤 수업 활동이 교수-학습 효과를 높일 수 있는지 등에 대해 충분한 정보를 제공하고 있다고 판단된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate English teachers’ belief on the teacher role as a resource of learning materials, a model of English pronunciation and expressions, and a practitioner of teaching and learning methods. This study also examines English teachers perception of students reaction to the role of a teacher and teaching materials and methods. To achieve these goals, a questionnaire survey was conducted to 40 elementary school teachers and 123 secondary school teachers nationwide. The major findings are as follows. First, while there is a little regional difference, most elementary and secondary school teachers of both school levels have a perception of what and how to teach and what kind of role they should play in class. Second, most of the teacher respondents feel that they should be a role model for students for English pronunciation and expressions and that students successfully follow the materials and feedback that teachers provide when teaching English at school. Third, while a minor gap is found between the responses of elementary school teachers and secondary school teachers, numerous teachers of both school levels perceive that their students react positively to teaching materials and methods they provide their students. Based on these findings, it is concluded that both pre-service and in-service teacher education programs are well designed to help teachers become equipped with the characteristics of a good English teacher.
