국문 초록

숙종은 정종의 시호 추상을 마무리한 후 곧바로 태조와 태종의 시호를 加上함으로써 왕실의 권위를 높여나갔다. 先王들에 대한 시호 추상은 단순한 孝心의 발로가 아니었다. 잊혀진 과거를 다시 기억함으로써 현실에 힘을 부여하려는 매우 정치적인 행위였다. 특히 태조 이성계의 위화도 회군은 조선 開倉의 역사를 탄생시킨 기억해야 마땅한 과거였다. 조선 왕실의 절대적 권위를 강화하고 의리론의 주인이 되려던 숙종에게는 매우 중요한 역사였던 것이다. 사실 조선후기 왕권의 강화 노력은 광해군부터 본격적으로 시작되었지만 파행적인 정국 운영으로 도중에 좌절되었다. 그 후 숙종은 왕실의 권위를 높이려는 다각도의 노력을 펼쳤으니, 그 가운데 조선 개국의 주인공인 태조 이성계의 시호를 가상하는 일은 무엇보다 우선되었다. 당시 숙종은 일부 신하들의 반대가 있었음에도 불구하고 위화도 회군의업적을 기리는 뜻의 시호를 가상함으로써 영광스런 과거의 재현을 이루어 냈다. 그리고 송시열은 선왕들의 諡號 追上의 논의를 이끄는 선두에 있었다. 왕실의 권위를 높이려는 왕의 의도와 이를 통해 尊周大義를 상기시키려는 송시열의 의지가 일치한 결과였다. 과거의 힘은 과거를 기억하려는 ‘현실’의 의지가 작용할 때만 에너지를 갖게 마련이다. 그런 의미에서 역사는 곧 과거에 대한 의미 부여의 정치학인 셈이다.

영문 초록

After completing the honoring of King Jeongjong with a posthumous title, King Sukjong jumped to the task of honoring Kings Taejo and Taejong with additional posthumous titles as well, in an effort to enforce the authority of the Royal family. Honoring past Kings with posthumous titles was not a course of action merely prepared by some filial sentiments. Remembering the past was indeed a powerful tool of enforcing the execution of certain issues in the present, and it was a very political maneuver. Especially King Taejo Lee-Seong-Gyae s decision to turn the troops around at the Wihwa-do area, back to the capital from a seemingly pointless campaign against the Yodong area, was a very important historical event which surely deserved vivid remembrance and commemoration, as the event itself marked the very beginning of the Joseon dynasty. To King Sukjong, who was trying to enforce the ultimate authority along with the power of the Joseon dynasty s Royal family, and also demonstrate himself as the leader in establishing the issue of Righteousness ( 義理論 ), such part of the dynasty s history was very important. Throughout the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty, efforts to strengthen the King s ruling power and solidify the King s ruling authority have continued since the reigning days of King Gwanghae-gun, but during the early days such efforts were thwarted because of the limping politics. Later, King Sukjong also engaged himself in various efforts aimed at the same objective, and honoring the founder of the dynasty, King Taejo Lee-Seong-Gyae with additional posthumous titles was considered one of the top priorities. Although he faced strong objections from some of the officials inside the government, he forced the issue and finally was able to honor the past King with an additional posthumous title which was designed to commemorate the Founder s biggest achievement that was represented by the Wihwa-do Return. And among all the people, Song-Si-Yeol was leading the discussions of honoring the past Kings with posthumous titles and praising the glorious past. King Sukjong s intention to uplift the authority of the Royal family, and Song-Si-Yeol s efforts to remind everyone the importance of ‘Honoring the Righteous Center’(‘尊周大義’) were indeed meeting with each other through this occasion. The potential power of the past becomes apparent only when present intentions to actively appreciate them become apparent as well. In that sense, the subject of history could be considered as a political way of empowering the past facts with all kinds of meanings favorable to the present.
