국문 초록

이 글은 영국의 레스터학파(Leicester School)의 제1세대에 속한다고 할 수 있는 H.P.R.Finberg의 지방사이론과 방법론을 논구한 것이다. 핀버그는 지방사의 독립성을 주장하며 지방사를 국가사․초국가적인 보편사(ecumenical History)와 똑같은 반열위에 설정하여, 세 개 분야는 저마다 다른 사회적 생(生)의 형태를 갖고 있다고 주장하였다. 이러한 데서 역사가에게는 세 개의 분명히 다른 연구의 분야가 있다는 것이다. 이러한 핀버그의 이론은, 지방사는 어디까지나 국가사의 체계화에 필요한 한 부분으로서 종속적․보조적이라는 주장을 펴는 학자들의 반론에 부닥치기도 하였지만, 그는 나름대로 합리적이고 축조적으로 재반론을펴기도 하였다. 그는 지방사만이 지니고 있는 특성과 지방사가가 갖추어야할 자질, 각급 교육기관에서의 지방사 교육 등에 대하여도 여러 가지로 우리에게 시사를 주는 이론과 방법론 등을 제시하여주고 있는데, 우리나라의 지방사 연구에도 도움을 주는 유익한 내용이 많다. 특히 한국의 경우, 삼남(三南)지방은 별개로 하더라도, 프로테스탄티즘이 전래됨과 더불어 그 경제윤리가 자본주의 정신과 결합․조합되고 이것이 자본주의 경제질서의 성장을 위한 정신적 기초가 이룩된 서북지방의 지방사는 핀버그가 논한 지방사의 독립성이론이나 방법론이 그 정당성을 확인하는 좋은 예시가 된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to introduce unique theories for the local history of H.P.R.Finberg. He claims that local, national, and ecumenical history deal with three interrelated but yet distinct forms of social life, each with its own chronology and its own spatial extension. According to his opinion, in the local, the national, and the supra-national community we have three distinct manifestations of social life, with different extensions in space and time : in other words, three distinct fields of study for the historian. But many historians argued against this theory. they asserted that local history is only a part of national history. By their opinions, local history is a method of ascertaing certain facts about the history of England. To these polemic arguments, he made response with the reasonable, logical discussions. In addition to these theories, he developed the various theoretical means to local History. For example, he declared that his business is to re-enact in his own mind, and to portray for his readers, the Origin, Growth, Decline, and Fall of a local community on the contrary to the amateurish antiquary, historian of Pseudo-local history. Even if his views on the local history is to England, these help to investigate our country s local history.
