국문 초록

이 글은 한국 근대소설 속 등장인물의 서양문학 독서행위 양상을 검토하여 소설 속 독서행위가 소설 구성에 어떤 역할을 하는지를 규명해보고자 했다. 이는 수용미학의 문제의식과 작가의 독서체험 확인에서 비롯한 것으로 근대작가의 읽고 쓰기 과정의 흔적을 재구성해내는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것이다. 소설 속 서양문학 독서행위는 대략 다음 세 가지로 유형화할 수 있다. 작가가 작품의 발상을 서양문학 독서행위에서 가져왔다고 밝혀놓은 경우, 독서행위가 구체적으로 작품 속에 드러나 있는 경우, 소설 속 대화에서 지나가듯이 서양 명작이 언급된 경우. 이 논문에서는 두 번째 세 번째의 경우를 주로 다루었다. 구체화의 소설적 기획으로는 김명순의 돌아다볼 때 와 이태 준의 사상의 월야 를 들 수 있는데, 작가의 독서행위가 소설 구성 및 인물의 주체 형성 과정에 큰 영향을 끼쳤음을 규명했다. 소설 속 대화에서 서양명작이 지나치듯 언급되어 있는 경우는 채만식과 김동인에게서 확인해 볼수 있었다. 이 경우는 풍자라는 맥락 속에 놓여 ‘명작의 소비’에 그치지 않고 주제를 드러내는 데 크게 기여하고 있음을 확인했다. 소설 속에 형상화되어 있는 서양문학 독서행위는 단지 명작의 문화적 소비가 아니라 한국 근대문학을 형성하는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 했다. 지향점으로서의 교양의 의미 역시 함축되어 있다

영문 초록

This study is to explore what role the reading activities play in the novels by examining the aspects of Western literature reading activities of the characters in Korean modern novels. This theme was provoked by both the problematic of reader-response criticism and confirmation of the reading experience of the writer. I think this study would contribute to reconstruction of reading-writing process of modern writers. I stereotype the activities of Western literature reading into three types. Firstly, the writer determined that his/her idea of work owed to Western literature reading activities. Secondly, the reading activities is represented in the work vividly. Thirdly, the Western classics are referred quickly in the conversation of the novel. I am chiefly concerned with the second and third types. I think that the examples of the second type are “Doladabol ttae”(the time of retrospecting) by Kim Myeong-sun and “Sasang ui Weolya”(Moonlight of the thought) by Lee Tae-joon. These novels show that the reading activities of writers influenced much to the process of novel construction and characters’ formation as an agent. The third type could be found in the novels of Chae Man-sik and Kim Tong-in. In this type, referring to Western classics is not only ‘consumption of classics’ in the context of satire, but also contributes much to revealing themes of the novels. Western literature reading activities, embodied in the novels, played a very important role in developing Korean modern literature beyond the cultural consumption of classics. Moreover, they implied the significance of culture as a directing point.
