일제말 박태원의 시대인식과 악순환의 서사

국문 초록

본 논문은 1940년대 발표되었지만 지금까지 거의 논의되거나 연구되지 않았던 박태원의 사계와 남매 를 분석하고자 한다. 박태원은 1937년부터 약 3년 간 예지동에서 살았지만, 이 시기를 시간적 배경으로 한 작품은 그리 많지 않다. 사계와 남매 는 박태원 문학의 ‘공백’과도 같은 ‘예지동’ 시절을 다룬 작품이라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 박태원의 다른 작품들과 여러 측면에 서 관련지을 수 있는 특성들을 공유하고 있으며, 1940년대의 시대상이 잘 담겨져 있어 ‘세태소설’적 특성도 나타나는 작품이다. 무엇보다 사계와 남매 에서는 박태원의 이전 작품에서는 거의 나타나지않았던 ‘종말론적 서사’의 특성이 나타난다는 점이 특이하다. 박태원의 대표작인 천변풍경과 소설가 구보씨의 일일 등에서는 ‘순환론적 시간관’이 두드러진다. 반면 사계와 남매 에서는 상충하는 두 가지의 대립적 시간의식이 서로 충돌하며 긴장을 고조시킨다. 하나는 파국을 향해 거침없이 나아가 는 종말론적 시간의식이며, 다른 하나는 그것을 원점으로 회귀하거나 혹은 파국의 순간을 무한히 유예시키려는 정반대의 의식이다. 이러한 종말론적 세계관은 일제의 대표적 예식인 ‘신식 결혼식’과 ‘경성 마츠리’에 의해 강화된다. 이는 일제말 신체제에 대해 박태원이 비판적인 시각을 가지고 있음을 보여준다. 조선인이 일제의 전시 총동원체제에 협력하는 것이 일시적인 위안과 소속감을 줄 수는 있지만, 결국에는 모두를 파멸로 이끌게 될 것이라는 시각을 작가는 갖고 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이 작품에서 활용되는 주요한 문학적 장치는 ‘가변적 초점화’이다. 옥순이의 어머니가 가족을 돌보고 있을 때만 해도, 작중 초점화자는 옥순이였다. 그렇지만 어머니가 돌아가시고 옥순이를 보호할 존재가 없어지게 되자, 옥순이는 초점화자에서 초점의 대상으로 전락하게 되면서 텍스트에서 밀려나게 된다. 이와 동시적으로 옥순이 남매는 도심에서 변두리로 밀려나게 되고, 경제적 나락으로 떨어지게 된다. 결말부에서는 그러한 파국적 상황을 일시적으로 나마 유예할 수 있게 되지만, 옥순이 남매가 ‘행복한 결말’을 맞는 것은 그리쉽지 않아 보인다.

영문 초록

This thesis will analyze Park, Tae－won’s ‘Four seasons and the siblings’, which was published in 1940s, however, it has not been discussed and sturdied until now. Even though Park, Tae－won had lived in Yeji－dong for three years since 1937, there were not many literature works for that time set. ‘Four seasons and the siblings’ is meaningful in the way that it covered same time period from Park, Tae－won’s literatures in ‘Yeji－dong’ period. Moreover, it shares many characteristics connecting to other literature work in many ways. As the literature work properly reflects the times, it can be considered as a novel of manners. This literature work is particularly special in a way that it appears to have eschatolocgial text which was rarely appear in the past works of Park, Tae－won. In ‘Four seasons and the sibling’, the tension escalated as the two oppositive conscious of time collided each other. One is a apocalyptic conscious of time toward catastrophe, and the other is the complete opposite conscious of time that endlessly postpone the moment of catastrophe or reverting back to the starting point. These eschatological consciousness strengthened by new style wedding and Kyungsung matsuri which were the representative ceremony in japanese colonial era. That indicates Tae－won Park had a criticism on Imperial Japan. The author addressed cooperating with the national total strength campaign could give a temporary relief and belonging, but he believed it would lead to destruction in the end. This represents that the author had a eschatological view on Korean people who cooperating to the campaign in Japanese colonial era. The most distinctive literacy device in this literature work was variable focalization. The focalizer in the novel was Ok－soon when her mother took care of the family. However, After her mother deceased and nobody to protect Oksoon, she had changed from focalizer to the object of focalization and pushed out from the text. At same time, Ok－soon’s siblings ended up living at suburb from city and facing financial hardship. Even though the ending temporary postpones facing the catastrophe situation, but it is not easy for Ok－soon siblings to have a happy ending.
