동양주의 담론에 대응하는 이효석의 ‘서구’ 표상과 댄디로서의 조선문학

국문 초록

본고는 이효석의 서구 표상을 파편화된 욕망이나 제국주의적 동일시가 아닌 맥락에서 재독하기 위해 일제 말기 동양주의 담론과 응전 양상을 살펴보고 당대 동양주의 및 모더니즘과 상이한 이효석만의 서구에 대한 의미화를 도출하려고 한다. 서구라는 표상을 문학적 생애 내내 강조했으며, 국민문학론과의 자장이 문제적인 이효석의 경우 그 의미가 각별할 것이다. 그의 평론 은 서구 표상을 통해 그리스 헬레니즘적 ‘육체문학’과 “개인의 자유와 안정의 절대경”을 문학의 원형으로 제시했다. 그가 꿈꾼 예술지상주의적 주체론은 국민문학론에 순응하지 않고 국민문학의 범주를 해체시켜 틈새를 만들고, 개인의 삶을 미학화 하는 문학 고수하기로 연결된다. 그는 다시 조선적인 것, 향토성의 개념을 다시 불가해한 것으로, 닿을 수 없는 것으로 만들어 해체한후, ‘조선적인 것’의 발명을 둘러싸고 제국의 명명과 대결한다. 이러한 맥락에서 이효석에게 조선/향토는 단순히 거리와 상화를 전제한 제국주의적 시각이거나 열등한 형상화가 아니다. 조선(문학)은 스스로를 미학적으로 형상화하는 미학적 주체가 되어야 했다. 이효석의 일본어 소설은 조선이 스스로 댄디적 주체가 되어 전통/미를 창조했고 이를 세계적인 미학으로 공증 받았음을 강조하는 구조를 반복하고 있다.

영문 초록

This article tries to examine Lee, Hyo－seok’s Inclination to Western aesthetics not as a fragmented desire or imperialistic gaze, but as a response to the Greater East Asia discussion in late Japanese Imperial period. I intend to explain that Lee’s notion of ‘Western’ is different from the ones occuring in the Greater East Asia discussion or Modernism. In all his literary work, Lee, Hyo－seok stressed the symbolic significance of the notion of ‘Western’, a fact which is especially important in light of its relation to the theory of National Literature. By means of Western aesthetics, his critique proposes hellenistic “Literature of Body” and “Absolute stage of singular freedom and stability” as a literary archetype. The subject theory Lee endorses is inspired by the principle “art for art’s sake”, and it deconstructs the category created by the theory of National Literature. In turn, this makes room for a type of literature focusing on the aesthetics of the life of an individual. Furthermore, he deconstructs the notions of ‘Joseon’ and ‘locality’ as something incomprehensible. Then, in the process of creating ‘Joseoness’, he confronts the Imperial act of naming what counts as ‘Joseoness’. In this context, Lee views Joseon/Locality not as a product of Imperial perspective or an expression of its inferiority, both of which implicitly submit that these are something to be objectified. Joseon (and korean literature) should be an aesthetical subject that creates its own self. As such, Joseon should be Dandy to create its own tradition and beauty
