국문 초록

박태원 골목안 (1939)은 주로 도시 하층민의 비참한 생활을 현실감 있게 묘사한 소설이라고 평가되어 왔는데, 본고에서는 소설에 등장하는 사람들의 삶에 설정된 미묘한 차이에 주목하여 그들의 ‘일상’을 구성하는 식민지근대경험의 중층성을 분석했다. 그리고 이 ‘일상’의 구성 방식에서 볼 수 있는 총동원체제로 향해 가는 시대의 흐름에 대한 인식을 규명하고자 했다. 골목안 에 묘사된 사람들에게 식민지근대는 각기 다른 경험으로 다가온다. 매혹적인 상품으로서의 위스키와 골목의 심연이라고도 할 만한 뒷간의 대비, 혹은 정이·순이 자매를 통해 암시되는 성노동과 연애의 겹침 등이 서사속에서 효과적으로 배치되면서, 경성 골목 안팎을 가로질러 경험되는 사람들의 일상의 다층성이 드러난다. 이러한 일상을 구성하는 힘으로 작용하는 것 이 경성에서의 식민지근대의 난숙이라는 역사적 문맥이다. 이는 이 소설에서 총동원체제로 향해 가는 시국이라는 문맥과 접속된다. 막내아들 효섭의 진학 문제를 걱정하는 순이 아버지는 그러한 시국의 변화를 신문이라는 매체를 통해 민감하게 감지하면서도 시대의 흐름에 뒤처진 듯한 “세월이 없는” 존재로 그려진다. 효섭이 입학한 고등소학교의 ‘후원회 발기회’ 자리에서 호구조사와 비슷한 심문을 받으면서 자기의 신세와 상반되는 거짓말을 순이 아버지가 늘어놓는 이 소설의 클라이맥스는, 총동원체제로 이어진 식민지근대가 낳은 피식민자의 불균형적인 삶의 경험과 이에 따른 사회적인 균열을 표시하는 것으로 해석된다.

영문 초록

While Park, Tae-won’s “Back Alleys” (Kolmok An) is known as a story that depicts the miserable life of the urban lower classes, this paper sought to analyze the gradation of their modern and colonial experiences, which constituted ‘everyday life’ of the residents in Keijo. Through this constitution of ‘everyday life’, the story displays a characteristic recognition on the time during the Second Sino–Japanese War and total mobilization. The narrative of “Back Alleys” describes colonial modern ‘everyday life’ in Keijo as a complex of multi–layered experiences. Alluring commodities like whiskey, a dark and stinky public toilet, notions and practices about love of the sisters (café girl Chŏng’i and high school student Suni) are effectively arranged to show the hybridity of their everyday life and the historical context of ‘matured’ colonial modernity. As this maturity of colonial modernity is linked to the total mobilization regime of that time, Suni’s father, one of the main protagonists who habitually reads newspaper but is alienated from the contemporary situations, tells a false story at the climax. Generating multiple meanings and implications, his story indicates unequality of modernity for the colonized people and the inevitable precariousness of the colonial society.
