영문 초록

The study attempts to identify structural disparities inherent in rural living environment and suggest directions for improving its total quality. The empirical analyses using descriptive statistics and canonical analysis are followed by categorizing rural living environment into four components to clarify disparities by component and by rural type as well as their major determinants. It is shown that, due to a strong association among four components, the problem of "lower level of rural living environment" can be attributed not to scarcity and emptiness of a specific component but to its widespread backwardness. The disparities by component show a consistent pattern across rural areas, and verify the existence of structural relationships among four components. It is also found that both two indigenous variables such as industrial mix and individual income and two exogenous ones exemplified by settlement hierachical rank and government subsidies, become the most influential factors in determining interregional disaprities. The study concludes by suggesting three developmental directions for improving rural living environment based upon the empirical evidences: an integrated approach to rural living environment development, the adoption of specialized development strategies by rural type, and the attainment of interregional balance of rural living environment.
