영문 초록

This essay is to assess the educational matter for Regional Development Studies in order more attention to be made to improving the academic performance of Regional Development Studies. The education in Korea`s Regional Development Studies is still heavily influenced by the technical and instrumentalist view concerning regional development and its resultant problem is the lack of student`s intellectual capacity and creativity to cope with the reality of regional development in a professional manner. The paper asserts that Regional Development Studies would emerge as a core discipline of social sciences in the 21st century when the social management of localization vis-a-vis globalization becomes critical to securing national competitiveness in a global society. This prospect can be materialized only if there is the educational effort to make students of Regional Development Studies intellectually more sensitive to and creative in apprehending regional development, in a wider societal context.
