국문 초록

본고에서는 도시의 개념과 기원 문제를 서구학계의 연구 성과와 함께 문헌사 및 고고학 두분야에서 검토해 보았다. 삼국사기 , 고려사 , 조선왕조실록 등의 문헌에 등장하는용례를통해 ‘도시’는처음에는 ‘도성의 저자’라는 의미가 강했으나 점차 지금과 같은 개념으로 확대되어 갔음을 알 수 있었다. 市民의 경우도 이와 유사하였으며, 市長의 경우는 근세 이후에 비로소 산견되었다. 그런데 고고학 자료는 문헌에 등장하는 것보다 훨씬 이른 청동기 시대에 도시가 등장하였음을 보여주고 있다. 그렇다면 왜 고대 사료에 도시라는 용어가 등장하지 않는 것일까? 필자는 도시에 대응되는 고대인의 용어가 따로 있었기 때문일 것으로 보고, 이를 ‘邑’으로 추정하였다. 고대문헌에는‘邑’, ‘落’, ‘都’, ‘村,’ ‘京’, ‘鄕’ 등다양한취락관련용어가등장한다. 이들에대한용례의 검토와 함께 발굴조사를 통해 알려진 다양한 양식의 취락관련 유적에 대한 비교 검토가 필요하다. 국내에서 조사된 개별 단위 취락의 특징과 양식을 표현하는 고유의 개념에 대한 개발 및 정립을 위한 고고학, 문헌사학, 인류학 등의 학제적 연구를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the concept and the origin of cities from the perspectives of archaeology and bibliography by reviewing research on settlements conducted in the Western academic world. Through a review of the Korean historical texts Samguksagi (三國史記), Goryeosa (高麗史), and Joseon wangjo sillok (朝鮮王朝實錄) it is shown from the ancient meaning “market place in an enclosed town” that the concept of “city” has the same meaning today as in the past. The terms “citizen” and “mayor” similarly continue to bear the respective meanings from earlier periods. Regarding archaeological records, it is shown that development of cities in Korea could have occurred earlier than the compilation of these documents. Then why do early historical sources such as Samguksagi not include the word “city”? I believe that ancient people may have had their own word that corresponded to the meaning of “city,” and I suggest that eup (邑) may have been that word. There are many terms in historical sources that relate to settlements. These include eup, nak (落), hyang (鄕), do (都), chon (村), and gyeong (京). These words are useful for examining what types of settlement patterns there were and for conducting comparative research on the archaeological sites of settlements in the Korean Peninsula. I hope that interdisciplinary studies utilizing archaeology, bibliography, and anthropology may construct concepts that assist in explaining the character and the types of settlements discovered in Korea.
