후기 구석기시대 쐐기(piece esquillee) 의 형태와 기능에 대한 試論

국문 초록

기곡 유적에서는 지금까지 다른 유적에서 보고된 바 없는 새로운 유형의 석기인 쐐기(pièce esquillée)가 출토되었다. 그 후, 상무룡리와 호평동, 상사리 유적에서도 양질의 고운 석영이나 수정, 흑요석을돌감으로만든이석기의존재가잇따라알려져현재약40점정도가보고되었다. 우리나라의 경우 이 석기는 2000년대 초에 기곡 유적에서 처음으로 인식하기 시작했지만, 프랑스를 비롯한 유럽에서는 이미 1906년에 이러한 유형의 석기가 pièce esquillée로 불리며, 다양한 연구와 논쟁이 진행되어 왔다. 쐐기(pièce esquillée)는 일반적으로 격지를 소재(blank)로 하여 만들어졌으며, 평면 형태는 정사각형이나 직사각형, 세로 단면은 대개 렌즈형이다. 직사각형의 네 변 중 서로 마주하는 위아래 두끝에 헝클어진 파마머리 모양의 으스러진 자국과 미세 비늘 흔적이 매우 뚜렷하게 밀착된 간격으로 나타나는 것이 이 석기의 중요한 특징이다. 이석기는후기구석기시대에주로동물뼈나뿔, 나무, 상아와같은단단한소재를쪼개고, 가공하는데 쐐기(wedge)나 끌처럼 쓰였다고 알려져 있다. 상이한 판단 기준에 따라 도구(tool), 몸돌(bipolar core), 버리는 석재(waste) 등으로 다양하게 해석됨에도 불구하고, 기곡, 상무룡리, 호평동, 상사리 유적에서 출토된 쐐기(pièce esquillée)는 크기와 형태상의 특징, 사용흔 분석 결과 등을 종합할 때, 몸돌이나 단순히 버린 파편이 아니라 쐐기의 기능을 갖는 하나의 독립된 도구라고 볼 수 있다. 앞으로 이 석기의 개념을 정립하고 형식-기술학적인 연구, 실험과 사용흔 분석, 민족지적인 연구, 고고학적인 분석의 융합을 통해 다양한 연구가 진전되어야 한다.

영문 초록

In Gigok site, splintered pieces(pièce esquillée) were excavated. Characterized by two splintered edge with its top and bottom, splintered pieces are recognized in new stone tool, which has not been identified in other site until now. Since then, this stone artifact was excavated in Sangmuryong-ri, Hopyeog-dong, and Sangsa-ri site. In Korea, splintered pieces was first recognized in Gigok site. But in Europe including France, such splintered pieces was already identified and called pièce esquillée' in 1906 and related study and discussion have been made. It was known as wedge with which hard materials like animal bone or horn, wood, ivory were splitted and worked in Upper Palaeolithic. In the aspect of typology, in general, splintered pieces are realized on varied categories: flake, blade, blade fragment. This artifact has a quadrangular form, which is short or elongate. Vertical section is all in wedge form of lens type. Two opposing extremities among four sides show crushed track in the shape of tangled permanent hair and traces of detailed scale which are very marked and closely spaced. Tip of edge is straight in many artifacts and some tips were deformed by strong power. To figure out technique and function of the stone artifact, splintered pieces excavated in Gigok site was observed with microscope. As a result, it seems from angle of shock waves that a number of compacted shock waves observed on two edges in common are not product of retouch but these were formed by power from vertical direction. This is assumed that it occurred by repeated hitting with hammer when the splintered pieces was used as wedge. Among them, two splintered pieces show red traces of strange material soaked through cracks occurred by shock on both straight edges. Whether this is bloodstain or not can be figured out by scientific analysis on ingredient. If it is clearly bloodstain, it could be most important key to identify function of the splintered pieces. Although the splintered pieces are interpreted variably in bipolar core, tool, waste etc. according to different criteria, it is thought based on size, typological characteristic, analysis result on use-wear etc. that splintered pieces excavated in Gigok, Sangmuryong-ri, Hopyeong-dong, and Sangsa-ri site would have a function as intermediate tool like wedge rather than bipolar core, waste. Through these sites, new recognition about function as a tool was raised. Accordingly, in the future, it would be necessary to give attention on if identical splintered pieces exists in other Upper Palaeolithic sites.
