삼국시대 불상을 보는 관점에 대한 제언

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 삼국시대 불상을 이해하기 위한 관점을 다양화하는 데 있다. 그러기 위해, 도상과 신앙이 일치하지 않은 배경에 주목하여 규범의 성격과 불교도들의 제불과 정토에 대한 인식을 고찰하였다. 먼저, 경전에서 예배대상인 불상을 지칭하는 방식과 불상의 외적형상을 묘사하는 방식을 파악했는데, 전자는 대개 특정 존명에 대한 암시 없이 단지 ‘불상’으로 서술된다. 이로 인해 삼국시대 불교도들 역시 제불을 보편적인 부처님으로 받아들였을 가능성이 상정되며 이러한 인식을 미비한 것으로 단정 지을 수 없음을 파악했다. 후자는 정확한 묘사대신 비유적인 형용으로 제시되어 열린 해석을 허용했다. 이로써 해석이라는 매개가 필요한 규정의 성격과 불상 상호의 자국화 현상이 서로 맞닿는 것을 확인했다. 다음으로, 서로 다른 붓다에 대한 신앙이 동시에 언급되는 삼국시대 신앙의 성격과 존명이 특정되지 않는 조상기에 주목하여 佛과 淨土에 대한 당시 불교도들의 인식을 검토하고 이를 바탕으로 불상에 구현된 정토 이미지를 살펴보았다. 경사년 신묘명 금동삼존불 조형과 발원문, 갑인년 석가불 광배·건흥오년 병진명 금동광배의 명문 등을 분석한 결과 삼국시대 불교도들은 제불을 동등한 구원의 존재로서 인식했으며 정토 역시 부처님의 세계, 불법의 세계로 보편적으로 받아들였을 개연성이 높다는 것을 확인했다. 이로써 한 불상을 어떤 부처님으로 인식하느냐 하는 것은 신앙의 문제임을 알 수 있었다. 끝으로, 불상에 반영된 정토 이미지를 살펴보고 그 성격 역시 보편적임을 서술하였다. 불국토의 주재자인 붓다의 형상에는 그것이 아미타신앙의 소산인지와 무관하게 정토 이미지가 반영됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 그런데 불상에 반영된 정토 이미지는 특별한 도상이 아니라 보편적인 성격을 띠며, 광명·미소와 같은 ‘밝음’과 신체의 양감·동세와 같은 ‘생명감’으로 구현되었다. 이러한 경향은 제불과 정토를 보편적으로 받아들인 것과 일맥상통한 것이라 생각된다. 요컨대, 신앙행위는 교리와 도상, 문화와 전통, 감수성과 미의식 등이 교합된 종합적인 문화 현상이다. 이러한 복합적 문화현상의 구현체인 불상을 폭넓게 이해하기 위해 관점을 다양화하고 시야를 넓혀야 할 것이라 생각된다.

영문 초록

The objective of this essay is to suggest various viewpoints to understand Buddhist statues of the Three States era. Instead of the existing approaching method of identifying relevant sutra and analyzing convention and style to consider the stylistic root in order to examine the statues more extensively, a method of examining the exterior of the statue on the assumption that the statue was sculpted in a close connection to the icon itself and therefore it should be identifiable only based on the external characteristics of the statues, the range of sutra regulations on sculpting the statue. In chapter two, a method of naming statues, the subjects of worship, in sutras and a method to describe external characteristics of statues in sutras were reviewed. About the former, all statues are described simply as 'statue' without any implications of specific names of the icon, and it verifies the acceptance of various kinds of Buddha as universal Buddha at the time. About the latter, a standardized descriptions were generated that allows expanded interpretations instead of any precise depictions. Consequentially, periodic/regional characteristics were reflected on statues, and a possibility of these reflections being the cause for domestication of statues' facial features were also examined. In chapter three, religious characteristics of the Three State era were examined on the basis of the contents from recorded document on construction of the statue for more detailed argument. It is also pointed out that complex religious aspect mentioning faith to different kinds of Buddha at the same time, and the fact that there was not any standardized appearance to buddhist statues are not due to the lack of the buddhists' ability to distinguish between different kinds of Buddha and paradise at the time. It is mentioned that although various kinds of Buddha and paradise were distinguished and named differently in phenomenal sense, there is a possibility that all of them are perceived as same salvational existences and places in ultimate sense. In connection to the complex religious aspect mentioned above, the fact that it is a question of religion and not of creed or iconography to recognize a statue as certain kind of Buddha was emphasized.
