巴金과 기독교: 《 田惠 世 》 를 중심으로

국문 초록

바진은 이미 작고한 친구인 林憾廬를 모델로 하여 사랑과 자비가 충만한 田惠世를 창조했다. 이 소설에는 두 명의 기독교도가 등장한다. 작자가 커다란 동정심을 가지고 묘사한 田惠 世와 비판적 색채로 묘사한 田惠世의 아버지다. 부친은 엄격하고 전제적이며 아들은 연민이 넘쳐흐른다. 교리에 집착하며 사랑보다 증오가 많은 부친에 비해 아들은 부친의 율법주의 신앙을 부정했으며 가슴 가득 사랑의 불꽃이 타오르고 있다. 작가는 무신론자인 馮文淑을 통해 田惠世의 설교를 반박하려 했으나 이웃과 사회에 대한 헌신이라는 점에서 양자는 일치점을 발견한다. 巴金은 田惠世와 馮文淑의 대화를 통해 기독교도와 무신론자의 사랑에 기초한 소통을 써내고자 노력했다. 즉 중일 전쟁시기, 이웃과 세 상에 대한 사랑 때문에 田惠世라는 기독교도와 馮文淑 등의 청년이 항전을 선전하는 《 북극성 》 출판을 통해 손잡게 된 것이다. 田惠世는 당시 巴金의 마음속에 있는 예수의 형상이라 할 수 있다. 이 예수는 영원한 속죄와 말일의 심판을 강조하는 진노의 하나님이 아니라 ‘주’의 사랑의 뜻을 철저하게 깨닫고 실천하는 인물이다. 작가는 田惠世의 삶과 죽음을 통해 기독교의 정신, 즉 용서, 희생, 박애, 분투정신을 보여준다. 또한 기독교도인 田惠世와 무신론자 馮文淑의 소통을 위한 노력을 보 여줌으로써 중국현대문학사에서 거의 다루어지지 않은 주제를 제시했다. 기독교도와 무신론자의 교류를 쓰고자 했지만 충분히 쓰지 못했다고 작가가 자인했듯이 보다 심층적인 부분까지 다루지 못한 한계를 지니고 있지만 요즘과 같은 종교 다원주의 시대에 자신과 다른 종교관을 가진 사람과 소통을 하려는 진지한 시도를 한 것만으로도 이 작품은 의미 있는 시사점을 던져준다 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Ba Jin created a character Tian Huishi, who is filled with love and mercy, modeled upon his deceased friend. In the novel, the protagonists are two Christians: Tian Huishi, who the author described with utmost sympathy, and Tian Huishi’s father, who is described in a critical light. The father is strict and authoritative, while the son is filled with compassion. While the father is obsessed with the doctrine and exudes anger than love, the son does not follow his father’s legalistic faith and instead is abundant with love. The author attempts to counter the sermon of Tian Huishi through an atheist Feng Wenshu but finds that the two characters agree on the commitment to neighbors and the society. Ba Jin reveals a possibility of communication on love between Christians and atheists, through the conversation between Tian Huishi and Feng Wenshu . Ultimately, the young generation, including Christians like Tian Huishi and non-Christians, Feng Wenshu , could cooperate on the publication of Polaris, which announced resistance during the Sino-Japanese War. In a way, Tian Huishi represents the image of Jesus to Ba Jin. To the author, Jesus is not an angry God who emphasizes the salvation from eternal condemnation and final judgment, but one who thoroughly realizes the meaning of God’s love and acts accordingly. The author reveals the spirit of Christianity, which is forgiveness, sacrifice, benevolence, and strenuousness, through the Christian character Tian Huishi. Moreover, the efforts spent on the communication between Christian Tian Huishi and atheist Feng Wenshu resulted in the creation of characters that are rare in Chinese modern literature. The author acknowledges that he did not end up writing on the exchange between Christians and atheists as much as he wanted to. However, even if the two do not completely understand each other, the attempt to communicate in a world of religious pluralism leaves room for much discussion and meaningful implications.
