《 意大利建國三傑傳 》 번역을 통해 본 한중 영웅서사 수용의 재맥락화

국문 초록

본고에서는 梁啓超의 《 意大利建國三傑傳 》  수용을 중심으로 영웅 서사는 한중 양국에서 각각 어떻게 번역되면서 재맥락화되었는지 탐색하고자 했다. 근대 계몽기 대표적인 역사전 기물인《 意大利建國三傑傳 》은 카밀로 카부르(Camillo Cavour), 주제페 마찌니(Giuseppe Mazzini), 주제페 가리발디(Giuseppe Garibaldi)라는 세 영웅의 행적을 중심으로 이태리 통일의 역사를 이야기한 작품이다. 이 작품은 중국 양계초에 의해 한국에 소개되었고, 신채호, 주시경 등에 의해 번역되었다. 근대 전환기 동아시아 삼국에서 모두 발견되는 공동의 현상 중 하나는 서구 영웅 서사의 번역이었다. 서구의 역사 전기를 많이 번역했던 것은 서양에 대한 단순한 호기심이 아니라 역사적 접근방식을 통해서 자국의 현실적 난관을 해결하려는 돌파구를 찾고자 했기 때문이 다. 이태리 통일의 역사는 서구 강국 및 일본에 저항하는 중국과 조선에서 국난 극복과 자주 독립을 목표로 한 지식인들의 의해 자국의 형세에 따라 재맥락화되었다. 양계초는 시세가 영웅을 창출해낸다는 제국주의적 색채를 바꾸어 영웅이 시세의 흐름을 주도해 간다는 점에서 입헌군주제를 실현시킨 재상 카부르에 주목했다. 신채호는 공화주의자 혁명가인 마찌니 를 강조하며 20세기 신동국의 신영웅을 모색하고자 했다. 주시경은 영웅의 전기와 통일의 역사를 순국문으로 소개하며 자국어 보급을 통한 자주 독립의식을 발양하고자 했다. 한중 양국에서 서구 영웅 서사를 받아들이는 수용의 방식은 상이했으나 영웅서사의 번역은 구국 을 위한 지식인들의 주체적인 모색이었고 제국에 저항하는 실천적 행위의 일환이었다.

영문 초록

In this paper, it is investigated how the Heroic Narrative were recontextualized while translating them based on the acceptance of Three Founding Heroes of Italy . It is one of the most outstanding work of historic biographies and a story on the history of the unification of Italy focusing the record of three heroes, Camillo Cavour, Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi. It was introduced to Korea by Liang Qichao and translated by Shin Chaeho and Ju Sikyung independently. One of the most common phenomina among the three East-Asian countries in the modern transition period was the translation of western heroic narrative. The translation of historic biographies of the west was overwhelming not because of mere curiosity about the west but because they tried to find a breakthrough in order to solve the difficulties of life. The history of the unification of Italy was recontextualized according to the situations in Korea and China resisting the western powers and Japan by intellectuals whose goals were the overcome of the national crisis and sovereign independence. Liang Qichao paid attention to the ideal type of politics such that heroes lead the current of time emphasizing Cavour against the imperialistic thought that the times makes a hero. Shin Chaeho sought new heroes in eastern countries emphasizing Mazzini. Ju Sikyung tried to advocate the mind of sovereign independence through the sprea of the mother tongue by translating the biographies of heroes and the history of unification in his own mother language. Although the ways of acceptance of Western heroic narrative were a little different in Korea and China, the translation of heroic narrative was the intellectuals’ independent pursuit of saving their nation and a practical act of resistance against the imperialism.
