梁白華의 《빨래하는 처녀》에 대하여

국문 초록

본 논문은 1910년대부터 1930년대까지 소설가이자 중국문학 번역 작가로 활동했던 양건식(1889~1944)의 장편역사소설 《빨래하는 처녀》에 대해 살펴보았다. 특히, 〈石獅子像〉, 〈슬픈 矛盾〉 등 1910년대에 창작되었던 단편소설들에 비해 제대로 주목받지 못했던 《빨래하는 처녀》가 가지는 근대역사소설로서의 가치와 의미를 재조명하고자 하였다. 당시 조선의 현실을 반영하지 않고 중국의 고대사에서 제재를 취하고 있고, 사상적 측면의 심각한 고민이 반영되지 않은 점도 있다. 그러나 ‘서시(西施)’, ‘범려(范蠡)’, ‘오자서(伍子胥)’ 등 대표적인 인물들이 작품 내에서 비교적 성공적으로 전형성을 확보하고 있다는 측면과 생동하는 대사를 통해 소설을 전개하는 세련된 표현에서 그 문학적 가치를 부여할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 전체 소설의 구성이 역사적인 단편적 사실을 근거로 상상력을 발휘하여 핍진하게 묘사되고 있는 점은 양건식의 필력을 확인하는 부분이라고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 중국의 유명한 역사적 소재를 활용하여 창작한 《빨래하는 처녀》는 제재의 특이성과 양건식의 장편 소설가로서의 면모를 보여주는 유의미한 자료라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates 《the maid with laundering》the full-length historical novel written by Baek-wha Gun-sik Yang (1889-1944) who worked as a novelist and a translator of chinese literature from the 1910s to 1930s. In particular, it focused on the values and meanings of 《the maid with laundering》as a modern historical novel which had never been properly noticed contrary to those short stories such as 〈The Stone Lion Statues〉(石獅子像), 〈The Sad Inconsistency〉(슬픈矛盾) in 1910s. It doesn’t reflect the reality of the Joseon Dinasty, writing materials had been adopted from the ancient history of China, and serious consideration in its ideological aspects has not seen on this novel. However, it would be granted the literary value on the aspects that the representative figures such as ‘Xi-Shi(西施)’, ‘Fan-li(范蠡)’, ‘Wu-Zixu(伍子胥)’ represent relatively successful typicality in the work and refined expressions by the manner of the developing the story through the vibrant dialogues. In addition, the general plot portrayed with speed and punch by the imagination based on the fragmentary historical fact may be considered to determine his special writing style. As a result, 《the maid with laundering》created using the famous historical topics of China would be the significantly meaningful data showing the singularity of writing materials and the feature of the full-length novelist of Gun-sik Yang.
