西廂記演義》와 《演譯西廂記》

국문 초록

《서상기연의(西廂記演義)》(1918)는 중화민국 초기 원앙호접파(鴛鴦蝴蝶派) 작가 유혈륜(喩血輪)이 《서상기(西廂記)》를 서사체로 개편한 한문소설로, 원작의 이야기 틀은 기본적으로 유지하는 가운데 디테일 면에서 다양한 변개를 가하여 새롭게 리메이크한 작품이다. 이 작품은 한문으로 쓰였음에도 불구하고 성공적으로 각색되어 당시 중국에서 대중적으로 상당한 인기를 끌 수 있었다. 《서상기연의》는 중화민국 시기 《서상기》의 전파와 수용의 역사에 있어서 나름 특색 있는 한 페이지를 장식했다고 평가할 수 있다. 《연역서상기(演譯西廂記)》는 《서상기연의》초판이 나온 지 7년 후인 1925년에 국내에서 간행된 활자본으로, 국내 편자(編者)로 추정되는 이면우가 중국본(中國本)에 약간의 형태적 변형을 가하고 한글 현토(懸吐)를 하여 출판한 것이다. 중국본과 국내본은 대체로 거의 일치하지만, 국내본의 경우 새로운 서문이 하나 더 추가된 점이나, 중국본에 보이는 평비(評批)가 제거된 점, 한글 현토가 추가된 점, 일부 표현이나 글자들이 달라진 점, 기타 편집과 조판 형태가 달라진 점 등 여러 측면에서 다소 차이를 보인다. 《연역기연의》는 《서상기》를 일종의 소설로서 애독해왔던 국내의 독서 전통과 한문 독자층의 건재(健在), 한중(韓中) 간 출판문화의 교섭 등이 바탕이 되어 출현할 수 있었다. 《연역기연의》는 이 같은 배경 속에서 상업적인 의도 하에 간행되었지만, 결국 대중적으로 그다지 성공하지는 못했던 것으로 보인다. 그러나 《연역서상기》는 20세기 초 근대식 활자출판시대의 중국본 《서상기》의 영향과 수용, 그리고 한중 간 출판문화 교섭의 한 단면을 보여주는 흥미로운 사례라 할 것이다.

영문 초록

〈Xixiangji-yanyi〉 (1918) is a classical Chinese novel written by Yu-xuelun of Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies and he reedited 〈Xixiangji〉 into a narrative style during the beginning of the Republic of China. He made a remake by using various alterations but maintaining the original story at the same time. Even though it was written in classical Chinese, the literature gained popularity for its successful adaptation.〈Xixiangji-yanyi〉 is considered to add a unique page in the history of propagation and acceptance of 〈Xixiangji〉 during the era of the Republic of China.〈Yeonyeok-Seosanggi〉 is a printed book which was published in Korea 7 years after the first edition of 〈Xixiangji-yanyi〉. It was published after adding Korean Hyeonto(懸吐) with a structural change and Lee, Myeonwoo was assumed to be the editor. Chinese edition and Korean edition are almost the same but there are several differences such as adding a new preface, removing commentary which is appeared in Chinese edition, adding Korean Hyeonto, Changing in some of the words and expressions, other editing and changing in formation of typesetting for Korean edition. The appearance of 〈Yeonyeok-Seosanggi〉 could be made due to Korean reading history which accepted 〈Xixiangji〉 as one type of novel, considerable numbers of classical Chinese readers and publication culture exchange between Korea and China. 〈Yeonyeok-Seosanggi〉 was published with commercial motivation in that situation but it was not very successful publically. However, 〈Yeonyeok-Seosanggi〉 is an interesting example that shows the propagation and acceptance of Chinese edition of 〈Xixiangji〉 during the era of modern print publication in the beginning of 20th century as well as one side of publication culture exchange between Korea and China.
