《홍루몽》읽기를 통한 인문학적 교양교육

국문 초록

인문학에 관해 그동안 논의가 많이 이루어졌지만 학교 현장에서의 인문학 교육에 대해서는 논의가 부족했다. 인문학을 연구하는 교육자로서 인문학의 중요성과 그 가치를 확산시키는 데 기여하지 못했다는 반성을 시작으로 그 동안의 교육방식을 되돌아보고 재점검하는 시간을 가지게 되었다. 중국소설을 연구하고 가르치면서 문학의 본질적 측면을 소홀히 해왔다는 결론에 도달하게 되면서 학생들에게 인문학적 교양 교육을 구현시킬 수 있는 방안을 새롭게 모색하게 된 것이다. 그 과정에서 중국고전소설의 완결판이라고 할 수 있는 《홍루몽》을 텍스트로 삼아 중국인의 삶과 문화를 이해하고 더 나아가 인문학적 교양을 쌓을 수 있는 첫걸음을 내딛어보고자 하였다. 본 논문은 바로 이러한 소설 읽기를 통한 인문학적 교양교육을 실천하는 과정에서 얻은 경험을 바탕으로 쓰여 진 것이다. 본 논문에서는 〈중국소설과 문화〉라는 과목을 통해 ‘《홍루몽》 읽기’라는 새로운 시도를 하게 되기까지의 과정과 수업의 진행방식, 《홍루몽》 읽기의 성과와 의의, 남은 문제점과 개선방안 등을 중심으로 고찰해보았다. 특히 발표와 토론, 과제와 퀴즈 등 다양한 방식을 운용하며 120회를 완독한 것은 힘겨운 시간이기도 했지만 유의미한 시간이 되었다. 다만 번역본을 텍스트로 삼아 읽어 내려감으로 인해 원문을 부분적으로만 접할 수밖에 없었던 한계에 대해서는 향후 보완할 수 있는 방법을 강구할 예정이다.

영문 초록

Although there have been a lot of discussions about humanities, there have been few discussions about education of it in the school field. Starting reflecting on myself that I have not contributed to spreading the importance and value of humanities as an educator studying it, I took time to look back and recheck my teaching method so far. As reaching a conclusion that I have neglected true nature of literature even though having studied and taught Chinese novels, I started to find a method newly for students to realize humanistic liberal education. In that process, I selected “Hongloumeng”, which can be called a final edition of Chinese classical novels, to understand life and culture of the Chinese and furthermore to take the first step that can accumulate humanistic liberal arts. This thesis was written based on the experience gained in process of putting humanistic liberal education through reading novels into practice. Through a course “Chinese Novels and Culture”, this paper investigated focusing on the process until I made a new try of “reading Hongloumeng” and a method of running class, result and meaning of reading Hongloumeng, and remaining problems and remedies. Particularly, completely reading 120 times while using a variety of methods such as presentation, discussion, assignment and quiz was hard times but it became significant. I am going to devise a method to compensate the limit in the future that we read a translation as the textbook and just met the original text partially. To conclude, it can be estimated that completely reading a saga “Hongloumeng” was a very significant process, in not only the basic purpose of meeting the best Chinese classical novel but also opening a possibility to overcome the limit that previous literary courses leaning toward theory had and broadening views and understanding of human beings and life by absorbing varied humanistic nourishments.
