『원미동 사람들』 에 나타난 도시의 일상과 도시공동체의 의미

국문 초록

이 글은 양귀자의 『원미동 사람들』에 나타난 도시성의 양상과 그 문학적 의미를 고찰하였다. 『원미동 사람들』에 실린 11편의 작품은 크게 두 유형으로 구분할 수 있다. 첫 번째 유형은 국가나 사회, 제도의 폭력으로 고통 받은 개인의 도시적 일상을 다룬 작품이다. 이 작품의 주인공들은 고립되어 있고 우울하며 침묵하는 자들이다. 주목할 것은 작가가 이 작품들에서 주인공들이 겪어야 했던 폭력적 상황 그 자체보다도 그 이후 그들의 일상이 어떻게 진행 되는지에 초점을 둠으로써 그 문제를 우리 ‘이웃’의 문제로 제기하고 있다는 점이다. 두 번째 유형은 생존을 위해 사람들과 매일 접촉하고 타협하고 때로는 대결을 벌이면서 소규모 도시공동체를 만들어가는 사람들의 이야기이다. 이 작품의 주인공들은 기술, 일자리, 정보, 공간 등을 공유하면서 서로에게 공감하기도 하고 또 공감을 통해 무언가를 공유하는 삶을 영위해 간다. 이는 1980년대 한국사회의 일방향적이고 위계적인 의사결정방식의 문제점을 우회적으로 비판하는 효과를 낳는다. 두 유형의 작품에서는 모두 게오르그 짐멜이 말한 바와 같은 도시인의 신경과민이나 외부환경에 대한 ‘지적’반응이 드러나지 않는다. 그가 말한 ‘이성적, 지적’ 태도가 개인의 주체적 삶을 대도시의 억압적 힘으로부터 지키기 위해 감성을 억누르는 데서 생기는 것이 라면, 『원미동 사람들』의 주인공들은 역으로 상처나 감정, 자신의 입장을 어떤 식으로든 드러내는 감성적 태도를 보인다. 목적을 위해서라면 절차적 합리성이나 윤리성은 잠시 보류해도 무방하다는 사고방식이 만연해 있던 1980년대에 원미동 사람들은 여전히 인간에게 필요한 것은 자기의 표현, 대화와 교섭 그리고 이를 통해 얻을 수 있는 공유와 공감임을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper attempted to examine urbanism and urban communities in Korean literature in 1980’s. The People of Wonmidong is a series of eleven novels, it could be divided into two types. The first type of works deals with one’s urban daily life suffering from violence derived from the country or community or social system. The hero of these works are those who are isolated and depressed and silent. It is noteworthy that the author has shown that it is a matter of our ‘neighbors’ by focusing on how their daily life has been kept since then rather than focusing on violent situations itself. The second type of short stories is about the people who constituted a small urban communities by contacting, sometimes confronting and compromising with neighbors everyday to survive. The main characters of the stories sympathized with one another sharing skills, jobs, informations, spaces and so on, or sometimes they shared something together by sympathizing one another. This has the effect of indirectly criticizing the issue which was unilateral and hierarchical decision-making in the 1980s in Korea. In two types there is no city-dwellers’ ‘nervousness’ nor ‘intelligent reaction’ which was conceptualized by Georg Simmel. He said that ‘intellectual attitude’ stems from repressed feelings by urbanites to safeguard themselves from the oppressive power of the metropolis. But on the contrary The People of Wonmidong shows the emotional attitude. They represent in any way hurt, feelings or their positions. In the 1980s in Korea it was widely acceptable and persuasive that it doesn't matter to persue procedural rationality or morality under the name of the goal, but The People of Wonmidong shows that it is important for us to share and empathize with one another and It will be able to get only through self-expression, dialogue and negotiation.
