『벽공무한』 재독(再讀)을 위한 몇 가지 단서와 하나의 텍스트

국문 초록

이 글은『벽공무한』의 형식적인 측면에서 확인되는 몇 가지 단서들에 주석을 붙임으로써 거칠게나마 이효석의 서술 전략을 재검토하고자 하였다. 일 제말기 소설들이 대개 그러하듯『벽공무한』역시 텍스트의 외부 요소들과 당대의 연구사적 형편에 의해 해석의 방향이 급변해왔다. 그런데 텍스트 외부 요소들을 보충하고 연구사적 시각의 변화를 따라가는 과정에서 자칫 텍스트의 내부에서 이미 결정(結晶)된 몇 가지 단서들을 놓치지는 않았는지 되짚어볼 필요가 있다. 예컨대 이 글에서 제시하고 있는 몇 가지 단서란 이런 것 이다. 첫째,『벽공무한』은 왜 주인공이 아닌 문훈을 작품의 시작과 끝에 초점 화자로 제시하고 있는가. 둘째, 문훈의 직업은 왜 하필 소설가인가. 셋째, 왜 문훈의 욕망과 일마의 욕망이 동일시되는가. 넷째, 근대소설의 양식이 일정 수준에 이르렀던 1940년대에 창작되었음에도 『벽공무한』의 서사는 왜 이토록 허무맹랑한가. 그리고 마지막으로 『벽공무한』의 허무맹랑함을 드러내 보여주는 경마 장면을 에밀 졸라의『나나』와 함께 읽어가면서 이 허무맹랑함 의 불가피성과 그 초과분을 걸러내려 했다. 이러한 내용들을 묻고 답하는 과정에서 어쩌면 이효석은 근대소설이라는 양식 속에 이미 내재해 있는 어떤 불가능성을 감지했던 것인지도 모른다는 것, 그리고 또 한번 어쩌면, 이효석은 그 불가능성의 벽을 허무는 새로운 소설의 형식을 『벽공무한』을 통해 실현하고자 했던 것인지도 모르겠다는 생각을 갖게 되었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reexamine Lee Hyo－seok’s narrative strategy roughly by annotating on the several clues appearing in a formal aspect of ByeokGongMuHan. As the novels in the last period of Japanese imperialism usually have, ByeokGongMuHan also have definitely changed its direction for interpretation according to the outside elements and contemporary historiography. But in the process of supplementing the outside elements and following change of historiographic view, we need to review if we missed several clues which are already arranged in the text itself. For example, these are the several clues which are presented in this study. First, why does ByeokGongMuHan present not a protagonist but Moon Hoon as a focalizor in a beginning and an end of the novel? Second, why is the Moon Hoon’s job a novelist? Third, why is Moon Hoon's desire identified with Ill－ma’s desire? Fourth, why is the narration of ByeokGongMuHan absurd like this although it was written in the 1940’s when the form of modern novel reached a certain standard? Lastly, I filtered out necessariness of this absurdness and the excess portion in the horse racing scene which reveals ByeokGongMuHan’s absurdness by reading Emile Zola’s Nana. In the process of asking and answering those contents, I thought Lee Hyo－seok might notice an impossibility which was existed in the form of modern novel and once again he might intend to realize the new form of the novel which tears down a wall of the impossibility through ByeokGongMuHan.
