국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 제스처는 언어발달 이전 아동의 의사소통능력을 평가하고 강화할 수 있는 유용한 수단으로 주목받고 있으나 이를 구체적으로 다룬 국내 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 말 늦은 아동을 일반 아동과 비교하여 도상적 제스처 이해 및 표현 특성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법: 연구대상은 서울 및 경기 지역에 거주하는 만 2세(24-35개월) 말 늦은 아동 15명과 생활연령을 일치시킨 일반 아동 15명으로, 두 가지 실험에 참여하였다. 실험 1은 CSBS (Wetherby & Prizant, 2003)를 이용해 상호작용을 하면서 아동이 자발적으로 도상적 제스처를 산출할 수 있도록 했고, 실험 2는 도상적 제스처 이해와 표현 검사를 실시하여 반응을 유도하였다. 결과: 실험 1에서 말 늦은 아동은 일반 아동에 비해 도상적 제스처를 더 적게 산출했으나 통계적으로 유의하지는 않았다. 실험 2에서는 부분적으로 집단 간에 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 말 늦은 아동은 일반 아동에 비해 도상적 제스처에 대한 이해 및 표현에서 낮은 수행을 보였으며, 도상적 제스처의 산출 유형에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 본 연구는 만 2세 말 늦은 아동이 일반 아동에 비해 도상적 제스처의 의미 인식과 인출에 어려움이 있음을 보여주었다. 이는 말 늦은 아동의 의미 인식과 언어발달에 영향을 미치는 도상적 제스처 중재 연구가 필요함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Objectives: Gestures have received attention as a useful means of assessment and rein-forcement for prelinguistic children's communicative competence. In the present study, we investigated late-talkers' comprehension and production of iconic gestures. Methods: Fif-teen Korean late-talkers (LT) from 24 to 35 months and fifteen typically developing peers (TD) participated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, a researcher visited the house of se-lected subjects and gestures were measured during 10 minutes of interactive play with the researcher. The tools used in the play were the symbolic play probes in Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS; Wetherby & Prizant, 2003). In Experiment 2, all children were tested for comprehension and production of iconic gestures. Results: In Experiment 1, LT had lower production of iconic gestures than TD did. But the production of iconic ges-tures was not significantly different. In Experiment 2, comprehension and production of iconic gestures was significantly different between the LT and TD. LT had a lower perfor-mance on comprehension and production of gestures, and the production of iconic ges-tures was significantly different according to type (shape, action, agent's action). Conclu-sion: The results of the study showed that LT of 2 years old had difficulty in understanding referents' meaning and in the retrieval of iconic gestures compared to TD. This means that intervention studies for LT's iconic gesture acquisition are needed.
