명사구 속성 일치여부 및 병행기능 유무가 노년층의 실시간 문장 처리과정에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 자기조절읽기과제는 문장의 어절별 실시간 읽기시간을 측정하여 어절 간 논항관계나 통사처리부담을 파악함으로써 문장 처리과정을 이해하는데 유용하다. 본 연구는 자기조절읽기과제를 통해 명사구 속성 일치여부와 병행기능 유무에 따른 관계절 문장 처리과정을 살펴봄으로써 노화로 인해 문장 처리과정에서 나타나는 특성을 살펴보고자 한다. 방법: 청년층과 노년층 각 30명은 자기조절읽기 방식으로 문장을 읽었다. 문장의 어절별 읽기시간을 측정하였고, 이후 문장 관련 질문을 제시하고 '예/아니오'로 답하여 정확도와 반응시간을 측정했다. 결과: 문장이해 정확도와 반응시간 분석결과, 노년층이 청년층보다 낮은 정확도와 느린 반응시간을 보였다. 문장 내 명사구 속성 일치조건보다 불일치조건에서, 병행기능을 갖지 못한 조건보다 병행기능을 갖는 조건에서 높은 정확도와 빠른 반응시간을 보였다. 명사구 속성 일치여부에 따른 반응시간의 차이는 노년층에게서 더 큰 차이가 나타났다. 핵심명사 및 주절동사의 실시간 읽기시간 분석결과, 노년층이 청년층보다 긴 읽기시간을 보였다. 병행기능을 갖지 못한 조건보다 병행기능을 갖는 조건에서 빠른 읽기시간을 보였다. 명사구 속성 일치조건보다 불일치조건에서 더 짧은 읽기시간을 보였으며, 노년층에게서 더 큰 차이가 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 관계절 문장 내 명사구 속성 일치여부는 노화에 따른 실시간 문장 처리과정의 변화를 파악할 수 있는 민감한 요인으로 노년층의 문장 이해력 평가와 중재를 위한 난이도 위계를 마련하는데 활용할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives: The purpose of the current study is to investigate age-related changes in on-line sentence processing abilities, when the noun-phrase (NPs) and parallel function of head nouns are systematically manipulated. Methods: A total of 60 individuals participated in this study (30 per age group). The study employed a self-paced reading paradigm to mea-sure online reading times for various sentences. Yes/no questions were administered at the end of a sentence to measure offline abilities. Results: Results from the offline questions revealed that the elderly group showed lower accuracy and slower response times (RTs) than the young group. Participants showed higher accuracy and faster RTs when the NPs were unmatched rather than matched, and for sentences with parallel rather than non-par-allel functions. Although both groups showed faster RTs when the NPs were unmatched, the differences were larger in the elderly group. Results from the online reading times with head noun and verbs in the main sentences revealed that the elderly group showed lon-ger reading times than the young group. Participants showed shorter reading times in sentences with parallel functions. And although both groups showed shorter reading times when the NPs were unmatched, the differences were larger in the elderly group. Conclusion: The results suggest that noun phrase types have greater effects on age-related decline in online sentence processing than the parallel function of head nouns. This is expected to help make a hierarchy of difficulty system for sentence comprehension which could be used for intervention with the elderly.
