영문 초록

This paper investigates the income elasticities of eat-out demand by dividing eat-out demand into three categories, and by estimating long-run equilibrium and adaptive expectation models using quarterly data of household`s expenditure and real GNI. Three categories are eat-out demand by total family, employee family and non-employee family. Major findings of this paper could be summarized as follows. First, long-run equilibrium relationships between eat-out demand and income in all three categories are confirmed through unit root and cointegration tests. Second, the estimated income elasticities of eat-out demand are all significant and greater than 1; which implies eat-out is a luxury good. Third, the income elasticities of eat-out demand by employee family are greater than those by non-employee family; this means that employee family is more likely to adjust eat-out demand as income changes than non-employee family. Fourth, the income elasticities of eat-out demand after the Korean economic crisis of 1997 are much smaller than those before the crisis; this decreasing trend in the income elasticities of eat-out demand could be explained by slowdown of economic growth rate, increased uncertainties about job-maintaining and future income.
