『회남자』의 음악론

국문 초록

유기체적 세계관을 지닌 『회남자』에서 음악은 주로 감정 교류의 매체로서 다루어진다. 비록 『회남자』가 노자의 시각을 이어서 고요함을 중시하지만 고요함 자체보다는 이 고요함으로부터 가능한 이상적 상태, 즉 만물이 전체 체계에 가장 적합한 방식으로 감응하며 상호 영향력을 발휘하는 상태를 지향한다. 감정 교류 매체로서 기능하는 음악은 이러한 상호 영향력을 돕기 때문에 긍정적으로 묘사된다. 이와 달리 감각 자극으로 기능하는 음악은 본성의 고요한 상태를 깨뜨려 외부 세계와 감응하는 것을 방해하기 때문에 부정적으로 평가된다. 『회남자』에 서술된 즐거움 유발과 교화 작용 같은 음악의 순기능은 노자 사상에 유기체적 세계관을 더해 새로운 음악관을 전개한 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 음악을 듣고 즐거움 같은 타인의 감정을 느끼게 되고, 성왕의 뜻에 감화되는 것은 다양한 개체들이 유기적으로 연결된 세계에서 감응을 통해 상호 영향력을 발휘하는 예로 이해할 수 있다. 음악은 유기체적 세계에서 감응을 돕는 매체이고, 이러한 감응은 노자가 중시한 본성의 고요함이 전제될 때 제대로 이뤄진다. 이전 시기 논의된 음악과 기의 유사성, 감정을 기와 관련시키는 사유에 더하여, 만물이 유기적으로 연결된 세계에서 기를 통해 같은 부류끼리 응한다는 동류상응의 관점을 지닌 한 대 학자들은 음악을 무엇보다 감정 전이의 매체로 여기기 쉬웠을 것이다. 그 결과 『회남자』의 음악론은 음악에 관한 외부 기준과 음악의 효용이 중심을 차지한 이전 시대 음악론과 달리 그 초점을 음악을 생산하고 수용하는 사람의 감정에 놓게 된다.

영문 초록

The Huainanzi which holds the view of the world as an organic whole mainly sees music as a medium for emotional transfer. Even though the Huainanzi puts emphasis on the tranquil state of the heart following Laozi's idea, it does not aim at tranquility itself; the tranquility is required as a prerequisite for all under Heaven interacting with others in a way best suited for the whole organic system. Therefore, music as a medium for emotional transfer is perceived positively since it helps resonate with others' feelings. In contrast, music as a sensory stimulus is perceived negatively because it breaks the tranquil state of the heart, and as a result hinders resonance with others. The positive effects of music described in the Huainanzi such as evoking pleasure and edifying the people can be more properly understood from a converged view of Laozi's idea and an organic world view. Through music, people share other people's feelings and they are also edified by sage kings. These effects can be regarded as examples that show emotional transfer by means of resonance in a world where various beings are organically connected to each other. Music facilitates resonance, and this resonance occurs properly when the inborn tranquility on which Laozi puts emphasis is provided. Along with a view that sees similarity between music and qi as well as a view that understands feeling in relation to qi, Han scholars espouse a view that things of the same kind resonate with each other through the medium of qi in an organic world. Therefore, it would be a natural step for the scholars to illuminate music's function of emotional transfer. As a result, musical discourse of the Huainanzi puts its focus on the feelings of people who produce or receive music, distinguishing itself from previous musical discourses where the focus was mainly on what music should be and do.
