장편고전소설에 나타나는 어머니의 존재방식과 모성

국문 초록

모성은 어머니 일 개인의 경험과 인식의 차원 안에 한정되지 않고, 어머니를 둘러싼 여러 제반 환경과의 관련 구도 속에 자리한다. 한편 모성은 여성을 옥죄는 수단으로 변질되기도 하지만, 여성의 새로운 가능성을 발견할 수 있는 지점으로서의 의미를 지니기도 한다. 이러한 두 가지 관점에서 장편고전소설에서의 주목할 만한 모성 형상에 대해 살펴보았다. 먼저 '父-母' 관계구도에서 '식견 없는' 어머니로 형상화되는 <임화정연>의 진부인 등의 경우, 아버지의 사유방식과 권위를 내면화하는 전략적 기제의 한 방편으로서 감성을 중시하는 모성은 일체의 가치 없는 것으로 왜곡되면서 '소외'되고 있었고, '식견 있는' 어머니로 형상화되는 <완월회맹연>의 주부인 등의 경우, 수직적이고 독단적인 성향이 짙은 부성과는 달리 수평적이고 관계지향적인 모성은 그 가치를 발하면서 '옹호'되고 있었다. 한편, '父-母-母' 관계구도에서 '이기적ㆍ의존적' 어머니로 형상화되는 <사씨남정기>의 교씨 등의 경우, 일부다처제의 압박 속에서 자식을 죽이거나 버리면서까지 정실 자리를 차지하려 함으로써 모성이 '遺棄'되고 있었고, '주체적ㆍ이타적' 어머니로 형상화되는 <화정선행록>의 충효혜 등의 경우, 가부장제적 억압 속에서도 자신을 자각하고 타인을 배려하는 가운데 자식에 연연하지 않고 남편의 또 다른 아내와의 상호 신뢰 속에서 자식을 맞바꿈으로써 모성은 '교환'되고 있었다. 이처럼 비공식적 담론에 속하는 장편고전소설에는 행장이나 제문 등 공식적 담론에서는 좀처럼 볼 수 없었던 다채로운 어머니상이 존재한다. 공식적인 담론체계에서는 누락되었을, 당대 현실에서의 구체적인 모성상에 대한 조명, 나아가 당대 현실을 뛰어넘어 미래적 가치를 지향하는 혁신적인 모성상에 대한 조명을 가능케 한다는 점에서 이는 그 의의가 크다. 조선후기 모성 담론을 적실히 고찰하기 위해서는 장편고전소설에서의 모성 형상에 주목해야 하는 이유 또한 여기에 있다.

영문 초록

Motherhood places on the many situations beyond her own experience and recognition. And motherhood changes to the method of oppressing womanhood, on the other hand has the meaning of discovering new possibility of womanhood. This thesis surveyed the style of motherhood standing out in the river novels. The emotional motherhood of madam Jin described as mother with no knowledge in Imhwajeongyeon is alienated as having no value in the monogamy system. And the mild and harmonious motherhood of madam Ju described as mother with knowledge in Wanwolhyemaengyeon is defended giving out forth the values different with highhanded paternity. On the other hand, the motherhood like madam Gyo described as selfish and dependent mother in Sassinamjeongki is abandoned, because she efforts to kill or discard the child and to occupy the status of legal wife in the polygamy system. And the motherhood like Chunghyohye described as independent and altruistic mother in Hwajeongsunhaengnok is exchanged, because she is conscious of herself and shares agony of women under the restraint of patriarchic society, and interchanges children believing the other wife of husband. Like these, diversified portraits of motherhood exist in the river novels as unofficial discourse differently with official discourse like memorial addresses or funeral addresses. This is meaningful in the point of possibility of vivid observation on the concrete real portrait of motherhood of the same age, and of observation on the innovative portrait of motherhood holding the value of future. The reason why we pay attention to the figuration of motherhood in the river novels to observe the discourse of motherhood of the late Chosun dynasty surely is also in here.
