한국전통가구에 나타난 조형표현의 기호학적 의미에 관한 연구

국문 초록

산업화의 영향으로 급변하는 현대사회는 생활환경의 다변화와 서구 문물의 유입으로 우리의 미의식, 즉 전통의식이 점차 소멸되어지고 변모되는 경향을 보이기 시작했다. 하지만 이러한 시대적 변천과 생활구조의 변화에도 불구하고 조선시대의 민가에서 가장 대중화 되고 활용도 높았던 반닫이는 그 단순한 조형성과 자연미로 인해서 오늘날에도 그 가치가 높게 평가되고 있다. 그러므로 서구의 무분별한 모방보다는 그들의 실용적이고 기능적인 정신을 수용하고 우리의 독자적인 디자인 의식을 병행하는 노력이 필요하다고 생각된다. 본 연구는 조선시대 안방가구 중 반닫이의 조형적 특성을 바탕으로 그 속에 내재된 미의식을 기호학이라는 구조적 방법을 통해 살펴 본 후 현대가구의 적용방안과 그 의미를 연관 지어 관계성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 분석결과 형태와 구조에서 음양을 통한 시각적 구조미를 나타내었고 재료와 마감에서는 자연그대로의 나무 특성을 살린 방식을 통해 자연미를 드러내었다. 표현장식 문양은 직선보다 곡선을 선호하여 특유의 아름답고 균형 있는 곡선미를 표현하였으며, 금속장식은 비싸지 않은 무쇠를 사용하여 단순하고 소박하면서도 간결하고 투박한 느낌이 강한 소박미를 강조함으로써 안정감과 평안을 추구하는 서민들의 미의식을 엿볼 수 있었다. 이상과 같이 조선시대 유교문화 속에서 한국전통가구는 균형, 비례, 조화를 중시하며 자연에 순응하고자 했던 미의식을 통해 고유한 조형미가 잘 드러나 있다. 기호학의 구조적 분석방법은 원래 언어의 의미구조 분석을 위해 시작되어 최근 다양한 예술분야의 의미파악에 활용되어 왔으나, 본 연구를 통해 생활예술의 한 분야인 가구에 담긴 미의식 및 사상적 의미구조 분석에도 상당히 유용한 방법임을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 우리 고유의 전통미를 가진 반닫이의 가치를 재발견할 뿐만 아니라 이를 통해 한국인의 고유한 정신에 디자인의 바탕을 두고, 전통적 이미지를 고려하여 우리의 정서에 어울릴 수 있는 현대가구 작품의 의미분석을 살펴봄으로써 본 논문이 제시한 기호학적 분석방법이 디자인의 의미와 발상과정을 발전시키는데 기초적 방향을 제시하길 기대한다.

영문 초록

By the effect of industrialization, the rapidly changing modern society faced the diversification of living environment and according to the inflow of western civilization, our aesthetic sense, namely traditional spirit begins to disappear and seems to change. Notwithstanding the changes of the times and living structure, even today Bandaji(Cabinet) is still highly valued, which was very popular and useful among the common people during chosun dynasty, because of its simple formativeness and natural beauty. Therefore, rather than indiscreet imitation of western countries, we may accept the practical and functional spirit of them, and try to create unique view of Korean design simultaneously. Based on the formative characteristics of Bandaji, one of the inner room furniture during chosun dynasty, this study examined aesthetic sense inherent in Bandaji through the method of structural analysis in semiotics and identified the relations between application of modern furniture and its meaning. As a result of this study, it showed the structural aesthetics visually with ying and yang in shape and structure, and natural beauty with utilizing the method of characteristics of tree as it is in materials and finishing. The patterns of decorative expressions prefer curves to straight line, so it showed well-balanced beauty of curve with uniqueness. Furthermore, in case of metal decoration, by using inexpensive iron it was identified that aesthetic sense of common people search after comfort and stability by emphasizing simpleness and plainness in spite of its roughness. As stated above, traditional korean furniture put great emphasis on balance and harmony in confucianism culture during the chosun dynasty and unique beauty of formativeness were shown well through aesthetic sense following the law of nature. The method of structural analysis in semiotics originally developed in order to analyze the semantic structure of language, and has also been used recently to obtain semantic understanding in various artistic fields. This paper showed that the method was a very useful approach for analyzing the aesthetic and ideological semantic structure inherent in furniture as well. Consequently, this study not only discovers the values of bandaji, our own special traditional beauty, by examining the meaning analysis of modern furniture works, which become Korean sentiment, with consideration of the traditional image, but also it is expected that the semiotic analysis method proposed in this study will provide a basic direction for developing meaning and ideas in design on the Korean's unique spirit.
