현대 섬유조형에서 루핑을 매개로 하는 개방구조의 특성

국문 초록

반절걸기 형 사슬고리를 매듭이 없이 연속적으로 전개하는 루핑은 오프 룸 직조기법 중에서 가장 손쉽게 개방구조와 폐쇄구조를 만들 수 있는 방법이다. 바늘과 같이 간단한 도구와 짧은 길이의 한 가닥 선을 이용하여 고리를 한 번에 하나씩 추가하는 형식이므로 그 원칙이 단순한 반면, 기본형에서 파생되는 변형이 다양하여 현대 섬유조형 분야에서의 활용 가능성이 매우 높다. 본 연구의 범위는 개방구조에 한하며, 루핑 기법의 선적 속성과 종류에 기반을 둔 조형적 특성과 개방구조의 상징적 의미를 분석하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 구성형식은 사슬의 모양과 전개 방식, 틈새의 비율, 이합과 집산에 따른 선의 리듬, 밀도의 차이에 따른 물리적 속성과 연계되며, 그물구조로 만들어진 사물이 야기하는 상징은 서로 다른 용도를 바탕으로 하여 유출한 알레고리적 장치로서 크게 포획, 분리, 장식으로 나뉜다. 매듭이 없는 그물 구조인 루핑은 가변성과 탄성이 우수하며, 사슬의 크기와 밀도 조정이 쉽고, 반복과 중첩이 가능하여 평면, 부조, 입체 조형물에서 다양한 양상으로 전개될 수 있다. 또한 여러 변형 방식을 조합해서 구상에서 비구상에 이르기까지 복잡한 패턴이나 이미지의 구성이 가능하다. 이와 같이 루핑기법의 물리적인 체계 속에서 구동하는 시각적인 특징뿐 아니라, 망구조의 사물에서 연상되는 상징을 적용하면 은유적 매개인 그물구조를 사이에 두고 안과 밖, 나와 타자, 현실과 꿈, 종속과 이탈, 욕망의 대상과 주체 등과 같은 이항 대립적 요소 간의 긴장을 표현할 수 있다. 석기시대로 소급되는 오랜 전통의 루핑은 여러 실용적인 품목을 생산하는 공예기법으로 널리 상용화되었으나, 현대 섬유조형 분야에서의 적용 사례는 기법 자체의 잠재적 가능성에 비해 상대적으로 미진한 것이 사실이다. 그러므로 루핑에 의한 개방구조의 조형적 특성을 분석하고 적용 사례를 제시하여, 좀 더 활발하게 이 기법이 활용될 수 있는 실마리를 제공하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Looping is an off-loom weaving technique for constructing textiles in continuous half-hitch loops without knots, which enable both open and closed structures. The principle of looping is simple adding a loop at a time using a single-eyed needle and short strings, but its variations are numerous that provide potentials to be widely adopted in contemporary fiber art. This paper is concentrated on looped openworks, and aims to analyzing structural aspects based on the linear characteristics and variations of looping as well as the symbolic meanings of openwork. Its constructing method is related to physical aspects formulated from the shape and continuing way of loop, the ratio of negative space, the rhythm of linear alignment, and density. The symbolic meaning of net as an allegorical device is divided into three, captivation, separation, and decoration originated from the images of daily objects made of net. Looping also known as knotless netting sustains flexibilities and elasticities, is easy to manipulate its size and density so that it can be applied, repeated, and layered in 2 dimensional, relief, and 3 dimensional artworks. By composing variations, the process also enables creating complex images or patterns in both abstract and realistic expressions. Besides the visual aspects originated from the physical side of looping, it contributes to unfold tensions in two opposite elements when employing the symbolic meanings of net as a metaphor of contradictions in between inside and outside, oneself and others, reality and dream, emersion and separation, an object of desire and its chaser. Looping has widely been used in craft for producing practical items since the Stone Age, but it is not fully examined in contemporary fiber art as much as its rich potentials. Therefore, this paper is to present the structural aspects of looped openworks and their examples in fiber constructions to provoke active adaptations to advance in the field.
