대중적 종교 시각문화 이미지의 의미와 역할

국문 초록

본 연구는 대량생산되는 대중적 종교 시각문화, 물질문화의 예로서, 예수 성상화를 역사와 미술사적으로 고찰하고, 그 의미와 역할을 현대 기독교도들의 개인적, 공동체적 집단 정체성과 관련하여 연구하였다. 기독교 상징으로서의 십자가와 그리스도의 시각문화 이미지는 사적, 공적 장소에서의 종교적 의례 행위를 위해 판매, 소비, 감상, 전시, 진열, 활용, 교육되고 있다. 성 유물 교류의 역사를 고찰하고, 미술사의 예술가들이 제작한 예수 도상화의 형태적 특정과 의미를 설명하였으며, 대량생산ㆍ복제되어 판매되는 시각문화 이미지의 소비에 대한 비평이론들을 조사하였고, 대중적으로 배포되고 판매되는 현대의 예수 초상의 시각문화 이미지와 1950년대 김기창의 예수 성화를 비평, 분석하였다. 대중적 종교 시각문화 이미지는 특정 문화의 전통, 역사, 이념, 도덕, 규범, 정체성올 형상화, 구체화하며, 그 문화에 소속된 개인과 집단의 가치관과 행동을 적극적으로 변화시키는 기능을 한다.

영문 초록

I examined the icons of Jesus figures as mass-produced religious popular visual culture. This study provided the overview of the cult history of relics, analyzed the icons and the artists' paintings of Jesus Christ through the art history, and reviewed the critical theories of popular visual culture. Then I critically examined the modern popular visual culture images of Jesus Christ and Korean artist Kim Ki Chang's series of Jesus Christ's portraits. As making activities of human culture, the practice of visual piety reinforces a range of allegiance and creates the communion and collective memories. Mass-produced popular religious visual culture images powerfully constructs the self and the social habitat in everyday practice, and need to be understood as the process of constructing and maintaining the identity of the self and the community and the religious groups' identities. Popular religious visual culture reveals constant and transparent features of daily experience embedded in peoples's beilefs, rituals, narratives, and behaviors. The religious popular visual culture of the icons of Jesus Christ has still the efficacy of behavioral changes to the beholders, the consumers of the images.
