국문 초록

한국의 일반고등학교에는 선택 교육과정이 적용되고 있으나, 고등학생들의 실질적인 과목 선택권은 잘 구현되지 못하고 있는 형편이다. 이 연구는 고등학교 선택 교육과정이 학생들의 과목 선택권을 확보해주는 데에 그 본래적 의미가 있다고 보고, 외국 사례와의 비교 분석을 통해 한국의 일반고등학교 선택 교육과정에서 학생들의 과목 선택권을 좀 더 확보할 수 있는 방안을 논의해 보는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 이 연구에서는 비교 연구법을 사용하여 한국, 영국, 뉴질랜드, 일본에서 선정된 사례 고등학교에서의 학생들의 과목 선택권을 선택의 양, 폭, 결과의 측면에서 비교하였다. 비교 결과, 한국 일반고등학교 학생들의 과목 선택권은 비교 대상국에 비해 상대적으로 미흡한 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과를 토대로 이 연구에서는 일반고등학교 학생들의 과목 선택권 확대를 위한 방안으로 국가 규정의 완화, 수능 준비 일변도의 고등학교 교육과정 성격의 재고, 수능을 포함한 대학입학전형방식에 대한 재검토, 과정보다는 과목 중심의 선택 지향, 선택 과목의 구체적 자격이나 인증과의 연계 등을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Although elective courses have been introduced into the curriculum in general high schools in Korea, true freedom of choice for students in choosing their own course of study has not yet been sufficiently realized. This study assumes that the notion of students' freedom to choose the classes they take is essential to what it means to truly offer electives in high schools. The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which students may be given more freedom to choose the classes that they take in general high school in Korea by comparing the situation in Korea with that in other countries. To achieve this research aim, the study compares the students' rights to choose the classes they take in selected general high schools in Korea, England, New Zealand and Japan by utilizing the comparative method with regard to three different aspects: the amount, range and result of the choice. According to the results of the above comparisons, the right of students to choose the courses they take in high school were relatively insufficient in Korea when compared to other countries. Based on these findings, several ways to expand students' rights to choose what they study are discussed, including relaxing national regulations, reconsidering a lopsided curriculum which focuses strongly on preparing students to take the college scholastic ability test, moving toward a subject-centered plan of study rather than a track-centered one, and making a connection between elective subjects and specific qualifications or certifications.
