허병섭의 사회교육사상에 관한 연구

국문 초록

전 생애에 걸쳐 사회교육 차원에서 빈민운동, 지역사회개발, 지역목회, 생태운동을 추진했던 허병섭의 삶과 교육사상에 대한 연구는 현대사회 사회교육의 정체성 회복과 사회교육자의 전문성 재검토를 위한 하나의 초석이 된다. 그는 1970년대부터 수도권 특수지역 선교위원회, 동월교회, 건축일꾼 두레, 무주 귀농활동을 통해 민중의 의식함양 및 경제적 자립, 생태공동체 형성을 위한 교육에 앞장섰다. 그는 사회교육 차원에서 기독교적 인간해방과 생태적 삶의 원리, 민주주의적 공동체, 주민주도적인 지역사회개발을 지향하였으며 사회교육의 대안교육적 가치, 사회운동의 수단이 아닌 사람중심의 교육적 가치, 노동의 전인교육적 가치를 강조하였다. 또한 그는 학습자의 삶에 대한 깊은 통찰과 교류, 학습자의 주체성을 존중하는 대화와 토론, 교육내용으로서의 민중문화의 내면화, 민중교육과 생태교육의 연결을 사회교육의 실천 원리로 삼았다. 허병섭의 생애와 교육사상은 교육과 사회의 관계라는 차원에서 교육제도화를 위한 선도적 교육실천의 의의, 사회변화에 대한 비판적 낙관론의 타당성, 사회운동 과정에서의 교육적 가치추구의 의미와 방법 등을 확인하기 위한 이론적·실천적 근거를 제공한다. 또한 그의 교육사상은 학습자를 위한 헌신과 교류, 교육의 사회적 기능과 현실에 대한 사회과학적 안목, 학습자의 실존적 요구에 대한 종합적 응답 능력이 현대의 사회교육자들에게 우선적으로 요구되는 전문성임을 보여준다.

영문 초록

A study on the educational thought of Huh, Byung-Sup who devoted his whole life to perform the works of poor relief, community development, local pastoral duty and ecological movement through adult education can be a basis for recovering the identity of adult education and reexamining the professionality of adult educator. Since the 1970s, he tried people’s consciousness-raising and economic independence and formation of ecological community through the adult education at Seoul metropolitan community organization, Dong-Wol Church, Doore-Cooperative for daily constructional worker and alternative school in Muju area. He pursued Christian human emancipation, ecological life style, democratical community and residents-driven community development through adult education, and emphasized the significance of adult education as a alternative education, the intrinsic educational logic beyond logic of social movement in adult education and the whole-person educational value of ecological labour. And some principles such as encountering and understanding learners in their lives, respecting learners’ dialogue and discussion, considering popular culture as very important contents and interlinking popular education with ecological education were used for the practice of adult education. His life and educational thought presents theoretical and practical grounds for confirming the contribution of leading educator’s activity for educational institutionalization, the validity of critical optimism for social change and the importance of pursuing educational value in the process of social movement. And his educational thought instructs that most important professional skills and abilities which current adult educators must prepare are commitment and interaction for learners, critical thinking about educational situation and the ability to response comprehensively to learners’ existential needs.
