호남지방 용왕제의 지역적 분포와 특징

국문 초록

이 논문은 호남지역 용왕제의 지역적 분포와 특징을 다룬 글로 논의된 결과 다음과 같은 세 가지 유형과 특징이 있음이 밝혀졌다. 첫째 해안 공동체 의례형으로 무당이 주관하는 풍어굿과 수륙재가 여기에 해당한다. 이는 곧 직접적으로 용왕에게 기원하는 의미가 강하며 공동체 의례 속에 용왕굿이라는 개별적인 용왕 의례가 있어 용왕을 드러낸다. 이때 용왕은 바다의 신격화이다. 바다는 어부들 삶의 터전이고, 그들의 목숨을 좌우할 수 있는 곳이다. 용왕에게 제의를 올려 풍어를 기원하고 험한 바다에서 무사히 돌아올 수 있기를 기원했다. 이울러 바다는 죽은 이들의 터전이기도 한다. 따라서 용왕은 삶을 관장하는 신령인 동시에 죽음을 관장하는 신령이다. 그래서 바다에서 죽은 이들이 천도되기를 기원하는 것이다. 둘째 해안 공동체 의례의 변형형으로 기원의 목적은 공동체의 평안이지만, 의례의 주체는 개인이다. 몇몇 해안가에서 찾을 수 있는 이 의례를 변형형이라고 한 것은 이것이 공동체 의례형인 용왕제의 변모라고 생각하기 때문이다. 풍어굿이 점차 사라지고, 수륙재와 굿을 주관했던 무당들이 점점 사라지면서, 공동체 의례를 공동체가 수행할 수 없는 지경이 되자 개인이 공동체를 위하여 거행하는 것으로 본다. 셋째 내륙의 개인 치성의례형이다. 이는 의례의 주체도 공동체가 아닌 개인일 뿐 아니라 의례의 목적도 개인의 안녕과 소망 달성이다. 특히 기자를 위하여 의례를 거행하는 경우가 많다. 이처럼 해안과 내륙이 다른 것은 용왕을 바라보는 관점의 차이이다. 해안에서는 바다가 곧 그들의 삶의 터전이고, 용왕이 자신들의 삶을 지배하는 신령이다. 아울러 고기잡이는 공동으로 수행하는 생업이다. 이런 점에서 용왕을 전면에 내세우고 마을 사람들이 다수 참가하는 공동체 의례로서 용왕굿이 있다. 반면 내륙에서는 자신들의 삶에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것은 산이고 그래서 산신을 받들어 모시는 여러 의례가 발달해있다. 산신제가 공동으로 올려지는 의례라면 용왕제는 개인이 모시는 치성의례이다. 이처럼 호남은 해안과 내륙에서 용왕제의 양상이 사뭇 다르다.

영문 초록

This article deals with the regional distribution and characteristics of Yongwangje (the ritual offered to the Sea God) in Honam area. Yongwangje in Honam area has the following three types and characteristics. The first one is the coastal community ritual type, and Pungeogut and Suryukje performed by shamans correspond to this. It has strong meaning to make wishes directly to Yongwang. Community rituals are performed along with Yongwanggut so as to show the existence of Yongwang. At this time, Yongwang represents the divinity of sea. Sea is the base of life for fishermen and is the place that determines their death. They offered a ritual to Yongwang to wish for a large catch of fish and for the safe return from the brutal sea. And sea is also the ground of the dead. Thus, Yongwang is the spirit that controls life and also death at the same time. That is why they wish for those who died in the sea to enter the heaven. Second, it is the altered form of the coastal community ritual, and the purpose of its wishing is to get the community’s comfort, but the subject of the ritual is each individual. The reason why this ritual that can be found in some of the coastal areas is an altered form is that this is thought to be the altered form of Yongwangje, the community ritual type. As Pungeogut was getting lost and shamans who had performed Suryukje or Gut were getting fewer and fewer, communities could not perform community rituals on their own any longer after all, so it seems that individuals started to conduct them for their community. The first one is the inland’s individual devout ritual type. The subject of the ritual is not a community but each individual, and the purpose of the ritual is also the peace of individuals and the realization of their wishes. In particular, they often perform the ritual to have a son. The difference between the coastal area and inland is resulted from the difference of the view to see Yongwang. In the coastal area, sea is the very base of their lives, and Yongwang is the spirit that controls their lives. In addition, fishing is their occupation they have collaboratively. In this sense, there is Yongwanggut it which they set forth Yongwang and a number of villagers participate as a community ritual. Meanwhile, in the inland, what influences their lives the most is the mountain. Thus, various rituals to worship mountain spirits have been developed there. If the ritual for a mountain spirit is the one offered collaboratively, the inland’s Yongwangje is the devout ritual offered by each individual. Thus, in Honam, the aspects of Yongwangje are quite different between the coastal area and the inland.
