임진왜란의 경험과 역사 정리 작업

국문 초록

임진왜란이 가져온 충격을 역사화하는 작업은 중국, 일본, 한국 모두 이루어지고 있다. 중국의 경우 참전 장수를 현창하는 내용이 주를 이루고 있으며, 일본의 경우 당대에는 참전일기, 에도 시기에는 ‘조선군기물’의 형태로 나타났다. 한국에서는 난중의 행적을 적거나 고생한 이야기를 전하는 일기류나 선대의 업적을 후손들이 정리한 실기류는 많았으나 왜란의 구체적인 경과 과정이나 잘못된 점을 반성하고자 하는 역사 정리 작업은 빈약하였다. 그런데 신석겸의 『선묘중흥지』는 왜란이 끝난 직후에 편찬된 다른 왜란사 정리물과는 달리 오랜 시간이 지난 다음 왜란사를 전문적으로 정리한 책이다. 게다가 정리 과정에서 다양한 고증을 통해 사실의 정확성을 높이려고 하였다. 특히 날짜, 인물, 지명, 수치 등에서 오류가 있는 것은 여러 책을 통해 고쳤다. 내용에서는 『선묘보감』의 편년 자료에 신뢰성을 두고 접근하고 있으며, 『징비록』의 서술 내용에 대해서는 비판적인 인식을 보였으며, 『난중잡록』에 대해서는 대체로 긍정적인 태도를 보였다. 또한 관군과 명군의 활약을 모두 아우르고 있으며, 게다가 선조의 주전 의지를 강조하고 있다. 강목으로 서술된 내용 중에는 단편적이지만 자신의 평가나 생각을 적은 부분이 있으며 특히 각 사건에 대한 시간적인 의미와 인물들의 역할에 대한 의미를 부여하고 있다. 요컨대 『선묘중흥지』는 전통시대에 나온 임진왜란사를 전문적으로 정리한 최초의 개설적 저술이며, 저술과정에서는 여러 책을 참고하여 오류를 수정하고 고증함으로써 왜란의 사실 구명에 크게 기여한 학술사적 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This article aimed to analysis of 『Seunmyojungheungji』. A sequence of historical works compiling about influences which Imjin Japanese invasion had produced to each dynasty - Myeong, Chosun, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi - have been achieved in academic worlds of history in China, Korea and Japan. Academic world of China has been carried out researches about achievements of the generals participated in war. In case of Japan, there was record such as “Chosungungimul” of Edo-period. But historical values of its material has been appraised humble. In academic world of Korean history, the historical works of Imjin Japanese invasion have been deficient. Most of them were some diaries which the generals participated in battles wrote their experiences and records which some descendents wrote about their ancestors' achievements. Their records were just works that had not contained historical meanings. Their records lacked the causes and progress of Imjin Japanese invasion and had not contained self-reflection and instructional comprehension of Imjin Japanese invasion outbreak. 『Seunmyojungheungji』 was historical record which Sin Seok-gyeom wrote and edited. Immediately after Imjin Japanese invasion end, some records such as 『Jingbirok』 and 『Nanjungjabrok』 were written and edited. But 『Seunmyojungheungji』 was the record high specialized which the process of battles and situations after elapsing from Imjin Japanese invasion. It was compiled to consolidate its accuracy on the basis of various historical evidences. At the result, some errors related to date, persons and place names were corrected. This compilation contributed to promote the level of that time historiography. In the course of compilation of 『Seunmyojungheungji』, it's contents was fairly relied on 『Seunmyobogam』 of historical materials of Dynasty and accepted positively facts of 『Nangjungjamnok』. But it referred to criticize high about the facts of 『Jingbirok』. The factional color of 『Seunmyojungheungji』 was the record which written by accepting opinions of officials on the Seoin. To be brief, 『Seunmyojungheungji』 was the first compilation which specialized to record about Imjin Japanese invasion and the meaningful record academically which tried to refer various evidences and to examine the process of Imjin Japanese invasion.
