국문 초록

1592년 조선에서 일어난 전쟁을 부르는 명칭이 전쟁의 당사자인 한국, 일본, 중국이 다르다. 이 세상에 존재하는 것을 지칭하는 말이 자국어를 사용하는 국가와 민족에 따라 다르듯이 역사적 용어는 다를 수 있다. 또 하나의 과거에 대한 기록으로서 역사는 복수로 존재하기 때문에 하나의 전쟁을 한 ·중 ·일이 각기 다른 이름으로 부를 수 있다. 다르다는 것은 틀린 것은 결코 아니다. 그런데도 다름에 대한 인정을 하지 못하고 차이가 문제가 되는 이유는 그것이 역사분쟁을 일으키는 불씨가 되기 때문이다. 역사학에서 명칭은 있었던 그대로의 과거를 재현하는 것을 넘어서 역사현실을 구성하기 때문에 역사적 명칭에 대한 심각한 논의가 필요하다. 자국사 중심으로 전쟁의 이름을 붙이는 것이 문제의 발단이라면, ‘국사’의 매트릭스에서 벗어나 대안을 찾을 때 해결의 실마리를 구할 수 있다. 과거는 신도 못 바꾸는 결정된 것이지만 인간은 역사를 다시 쓸 수 있고 만들 수 있다. 이것을 아는 현재의 역사가는 1592년 전쟁이 일어났을 당시 과거의 사실을 알려주는 표지판을 넘어서 그 역사적 경험을 교훈 삼아 미래의 방향을 가리키는 이정표의 역할을 할 수 있는 역사 용어를 만들어낼 책무가 있다. 우리시대 역사가는 이 같은 새로운 역사 용어의 창출을 궁극적인 목표로 삼고 1592년 전쟁의 역사를 다시 쓰려는 노력을 해야 한다. 한 ·중 ·일의 역사가는 역사인식의 공유가 가능할 수 있는 역사를 쓰는 행위를 통해서 동아시아 평화와 상생을 위한 미래 새역사 창조에 기여하는 일을 할 수 있다. 이 같은 문제의식으로 필자는 역사 용어란 과거 사건을 반영하는 거울인 동시에 미래 역사를 비추는 등불이라는 생각을 갖고 한 ·중 ·일 ‘국사’의 차이를 넘어설 수 있는 문명사적인 관점에서의 1592년 전쟁에 대한 성찰을 하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The war which broke out in Chosun in 1592 is named differently in three different involved countries, i. e. Chosun, Japan and China. Languages vary according to states and nations. So do historical terminologies. Since history as a documentation for the past exists in plural forms, even the same war can be called all differently in Chosun, Japan and China. Being different does not mean being wrong. Nonetheless, the reason why difference matters is that it can trigger historical conflicts. In history, names do not represent the past as it had been, but construct the historical reality. So, it deserves a serious discussion about it. If a nation-centric name of a war causes a problem, we can find a solution when we go beyond the matrix of national history. Whereas the past can never be revised even by the God, history can be rewritten and remade by human beings. Historians of the present who is aware of this fact are responsible for creating historical terminologies which are more than a mere sign pointing to the past in 1592, i. e. historical terminologies which could serve as a landmark pointing to the future direction, based upon the lessons of historical experience. Historians of our era should strive to rewrite the history of the war of 1592, having as a goal the creation of this kind of new historical terminology. Korean, Chinese and Japanese historians could contribute to creating a new history for the future on behalf of the peace and coexistence in East Asia through a historiography enabling a common historical epistemology. Taking this question as a departure point, this paper will address that a historical terminology is a lamp illuminating the future history as well as a mirror reflecting the past fact, and will reflect on the war of 1592 from a civilizational historical viewpoint which could get over the difference of the Korean, Chinese and Japanese national history.
