수형자들의 교정프로그램과 범죄경력이 자존감에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

수형자들의 자존감 수준에 관한 연구는 두 가지의 연구방향이 있는데 이는 두 가지의 상반되는 자존감과 범죄와의 관계를 설명하는 이론적 주장들에 근거하고 있다. 첫 번째 연구방향은 낮은 자존감과 범죄자들의 공격성과 관련을 지지하는 연구이론에 근거한 접근이며 두 번째는 왜곡된 형태의 높은 자존감인 방어적 자존감과 범죄의 증가가 관련이 되어 있다는 이론적 주장에 근거한 접근방향이다. 이와 같은 이론적 주장들을 검증하는 다수의 경험적 연구가 수행되었으나 부정적 자존감과 범죄의 관계를 설명하는 이론적 주장 중 Baumeister 등이 주장한 수형자의 수형생활 및 범죄경험이 방어적 자존감에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 가에 대한 양적연구가 거의 이루어지지 못하여 경험적 검증이 많이 부족한 실정이다. 이 연구는 과장된 수형자들의 자존감과 그들의 수형기간의 경험 등을 포함한 범죄경력의 긍정적인 관계에 대해 주장한 Baumeister와 그의 동료들의 주장을 검증하고자 하였다. 첫째, 장기간동안 수형되고, 청소년기의 유죄판결경험이 있고, 전과기록이 더 많은 수형자들이 더 높은 과장된 형태의 자존감을 나타내게 될 것이고, 둘째, 반대로 수형자들의 다양한 재활프로그램들에의 참여가 수형자들의 자존감을 높이는 효과가 있을 것이라는 가설의 검증이다. 분석을 위해서 384명의 성인 남자수형자들의 표본을 사용하여 범죄경력, 교정기관프로그램에의 참여, 그리고 수형자들의 인구통계학적 변인들이 이들의 자존감수준에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 가를 다중회귀분석기법으로 분석하였다. 분석결과 낮은 자존감을 지닌 범죄자들이 높은 범죄율을 가지고 있다는 관계를 지지하는 연구결과를 발견하였다. 즉, 다수의 교정기관에의 수형경험이 있는 수형자들이 그렇지 않은 수형자들에 비해서 더 낮은 자존감을 가지고 있었다. 또한 분석결과 교정기관의 프로그램의 참여와 수형자들의 자존감 수준과의 관계에 혼합적인 결과가 발견되었다.

영문 초록

In the field of corrections research, it is one of the most frequently tested topics that examine the factors influencing on the level of self-esteem among inmates. In relation with this line of research, there are two theoretical perspectives that applied in examining the level of inmates' self-esteem. One of the theoretical perspective supports the relationship between increased criminal behavior and low self-esteem. On the other hand, the other one, which has a rival viewpoints, argues that elevated and defensible self-esteem may be related to criminal offending. This current study attempts to examine the controversial self-esteem and criminal offending nexus by using a sample of 384 male adults inmates in nine prisons in Korea. To conduct analysis, a mulitvariate regression analysis was utilized to explore this nexus by examining the impact of criminal history, participation in prison programs and demographic characteristics of the inmates on the level of the participants' self-esteem. Overall, this study found supportive evidence for the relationship between crime and low-self-esteem. That is, inmates who have multiple incarceration history are more likely to have lower level of self-esteem than counterparts. Also, it found that there are some mixed results supporting the relationship between prison program participation and inmates' level of self-esteem.
