로티와 푸코의 반정초주의적 성향과 재서술 개념

국문 초록

미셀 푸코와 리차드 로티는 철학계의 이단아라는 꼬리표가 붙어 다닌다. 푸코는 사회학자나 역사학자로 분류되는 것이 더 옳다는 말이 있다. 로티는 동료 철학자들 ― 심지어 신실용주의자로 분류되는 퍼트남에게서 조차도 ― 로부터 유아론적 상대주의자이며 문학평론가라고 공격을 받았다. 이런 평가는 푸코와 로티가 스스로 자초한 면이 있는데, 그들은 일부러 자신들의 철학을 다른 철학자들과 각기 다르게 표현했다. 그러나 그들의 사유에는 첫째로 인식론적 ‘반정초주의(anti-foundationalism)’라는 공통점이 있어 보인다. 하지만 로티는 인식론 자체를 받아들이지 않았으며, 푸코는 인식론적 내용에 대해 거의 언급하지 않았다. 그들에게 있어서 이는 너무나 자연스러워서, 그들의 사유 체계 내에 면면히 스며들어 있었다. 둘째로 그들에게는 ‘재서술(redescription)'이란 일종의 메타텍스트적인 공통개념이 있다. 재서술은 각자 자신의 관점에서 자신의 사유를 세상에 언어로 투영하고 서술해 나가면서, 이에 따라 자신의 삶을 영위해 나가는 ‘자유로운 서술자’라는 의미일 것이다.―이 둘은 모두 전래의 철학에 반기를 드는 내용이라 평가될 수 있다. 푸코와 로티의 이런 면들은 반정초주의적 관념론과 재서술주의라고 호칭할 수 있다. 그들은 추구하려 했던 것은 기본적으로 전통 철학의 사유 방식에서 자유롭게 되고, 본질주의적•합리주의적인 관점과 행위로부터의 자유였다. 따라서 두 사람에게 보편적이고 불변의 토대가 있다는 사유와 그 사유에서 나온 세계는 하나의 관점에서 나온 세계에 불과하다. 물론 이런 반정초주의적 성향은 허무주의, 회의주의, 상대주의 등으로 해석될 수 있으며, 푸코와 로티 스스로도 이를 잘 알고 있었던 것 같다. 즉 인간 지식 전체를 소설로 만들어 버렸던 푸코와 로티 역시 소설가들일 따름이며, 이를 자신들도 인지하고 있었던 것이다. 하지만 바로 그렇기 때문에 푸코와 로티의 반정초주의적 경향은 인간의 지식이 현재적이며, 통시적으로 완전하게 절대적일 수는 없다는 면을 드러내고, 더 나아가 인간에게는 세상을 늘 새롭게 해석하며 지식을 만들어 온 원동력으로서의 해체적 창의주의와 창조적 서술주의가 있어왔음을 강조하려 했던 것으로 해석될 수도 있다.

영문 초록

It is not odd that Michael Foucault and Richard Rorty could be called as a heretic for many philosophers. There is a saying that Foucault should be counted as a sociologist or historian. Rorty was vehemently attacked by his fellow philosophers including other neo-pragmatist such as Putnam. In fact, this was a result of what they did. Their thoughts were so much different from traditional main stream philosophy. And so, in some sense, they were different from one another as well. However, firstly, their common sense could be told as ‘epistemological anti-foundationalism’. Rorty does not take epistemology itself and Foucault hardly mention any epistemological reference though. It seems that this thought was so natural for them, since this reside in their each thought system. Secondly, in addition, there is an idea which can be named as ‘redescription’ as a meta-textual notion. For them, it means that people can reflect their own thoughts and perspectives to the world for their own lives. In this sense, all people could be called a free redescriber to write each of their stories.―Obviously, both of two seems to be a concept which rise against traditional philosophy. I would like to say that these are anti-foundational idealism and redescriptionism of Foucault and Rorty. What they wanted to pursue is free from traditional philosophical thought system and one strict perspective and action in the context of essentialism and rationalism. For them, the thought that there is the universal and unchanged epistemological foundation, and the world which is reflected by this thought, are nothing but a result which is from one perspective. Of course, this anti-foundational tendency could be interpreted as some kind of nihilism, skepticism, relativism, etc, and I am sure that they already know this. In other words, Foucault and Rorty who treated all human knowledge as Fiction(that does not mean ‘fiction’ in literature but Fiction since all human knowledge have been made by humans) knew that they are one of the Fiction writers as well. Hence, the anti-foundational tendency of Foucault and Rorty actually presents that, on the one hand, human knowledge is neither permanent nor absolute, and on the other hand, human beings generally have that there are de-constructive creationism and creative predicatism as the power source of human knowledge. Certainly, this is one way of interpretation of human.
