국문 초록

서양 철학사에서 두 가지 도덕철학, 즉 쾌락으로서의 행복을 인간 행위의 최고 원리로 삼는 도덕철학과, 쾌락과 무관한 의무의 이행을 역설하는 도덕철학은 통상 양립할 수 없는 것으로 간주되어 왔다. 칸트는 행복이 감각적인 경향성의 만족을 통칭하는 개념임을 전제하면서 행복을 인간 행위의 최고 원리로 삼는 도덕철학 일반을 비판한다. 하지만 그러한 비판은 칸트가 전제한 행복 개념내에서만, 다시 말해 행복이 모든 사적 쾌락의 총괄 개념임을 전제할 때에만 타당성을 갖는다. 그렇다면 행복을 인간의 최고선으로 보았던 아리스토텔레스의 견해는 이와 관련하여 어떤 의의를 가질까? 그것은 칸트가 전제했던 쾌락주의적 행복 개념에 수렴되는가? 만약 아리스토텔레스의 행복개념이 칸트적인 도덕성과 양립할 수 있는 내용적 규정들을 포함하고 있다면, 우리는 칸트가 전제한 행복 개념이 지나치게 편협한 개념임을 입증할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 우리는 이를 토대로 행복개념의 포괄적인 의의를 새로이 부각함으로써 쾌락주의와 의무론이라는 전통적 양극단을 발전적으로 지양하고 종합하려는 시도를 감행할 수도 있을 것이다. 이 글에서 논자는 그러한 가능성을 타진해 보기 위해 행복에 대한 아리스토텔레스의 논의를 검토해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

In the history of western philosophy two sorts of moral philosophy, the utilitarian one which regards happiness as pleasure as the first principle of human action on the one hand, and the deontological one which supports the dutifulness unconcerned with pleasure one on the other hand, have been usually thought to be mutually incompatible. Immanuel Kant presupposes that 'happiness' is a colligated concept which is used to name collectively all the satisfactions of sensual inclinations, and criticizes the moral philosophy in general which regards happiness as the first principle of human action. But such a critique is validated only on the basis of the concept of happiness which he presupposes, that is, one as a colligated concept of all the private pleasures. If so, how about the Aristotelian view of happiness as the highest good of human being? Is it reduced to the hedonistic concept of happiness which Kant presupposes? If the Aristotelian concept of happiness includes the substantial contents compatible with the Kantian morality, we could show that the concept of happiness which Kant presupposes is too narrow one. Furthermore, on the basis of this point we could try to sublate and synthesize the traditional dichotomy of hedonism and deontology by giving prominence to the new comprehensive significance of the concept of happiness. In this essay I will examine the Aristotelian view of happiness to show that it is possible.
