최인훈의『소설가 구보씨의 일일』고찰

국문 초록

최인훈의 연작소설 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 1930년대에 박태원에 의해 쓰여진 동명의 소설을 패로디한 작품이다. 박태원의 작품은 1930년대 모더니즘 소설의 대표작의 하나이며, 소설가 소설이라는 독특한 형식을 가지고 있다. 최인훈은 이러한 박태원의 작품을 패로디 하여 1930년대가 아닌 1970년대식 소설가 구보를 그려내고 있다. 최인훈의 구보는 6,25때 월남하여 홀몸으로 지내는 소설가이다. 소설은 이러한 구보의 나날의 삶의 기록이다. 최인훈의 연작소설 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』은 1930년대에 박태원에 의해 쓰여진 동명의 소설을 패로디 한 작품이다. 박태원의 작품은 1930년대 모더니즘 소설의 대표작의 하나이며, 소설가 소설이라는 독특한 형식을 가지고 있다. 최인훈은 이러한 박태원의 작품을 패러디하여 1930년대가 아닌 1970년대식 소설가 구보를 그려내고 있다. 최인훈의 구보는 6,25때 월남하여 홀몸으로 지내는 소설가이다. 소설은 이러한 구보의 나날의 삶의 기록이다. 소설에 등장하는 구보씨는 1960년대 후반에서 1970년대 초반의 한국 사회의 움직임을 바라보면서 당혹감을 느끼고 있다. 이러한 당혹감은 월남자로서의 그의 뿌리를 잃어버린 삶의 정황과도 연관된다. 역사의 격변 속에서의 소설과 예술의 의미에 대해 그는 숙고하지만, 그는 인간의 삶과 역사의 진행 방향에 관한 확실한 해명에 도달하지는 못한다. 소설의 전반부는 우선 구보씨가 어떠한 상황에 처했는가를 자세하게 설명하고 있다. 구보씨는 냉전체제의 변화에 당혹감을 갖고 있다. 이러한 당혹감은 한국의 상황이 기본적으로 냉전세력에 의해 규정되고 있다고 생각하기 때문이다. 이것은 역사 자체에 대한 당혹감과 연관된다. 구보씨는 일본의 천황, 이승만, 스탈린 등의 우상이 쓰러지는 것을 보았고 닉슨의 북경방문과 남북적십자 회담을 보았다. 천황-스탈린-이승만'이라는 세 이름 속에서 구보씨의 반생의 정신은 어리둥절하면서 지나온 것이었다. 이러한 역사의 격변에서 개인은 역사의 주체이기보다는 객체와 꼭두각시에 불과하다는 생각을 지울 수 없다. 개인은 이러한 역사의 격변에 의해 수동적으로 대응할 수밖에 없는 속수무책의 처지일 수밖에 없다. 작가로서의 구보의 삶에 있어서도 이러한 상황은 매우 당혹스럽고 고통스러운 것이다. 그의 창작은 역사적 상황 안에서 이루어질 수밖에 없는 것이기 때문이다. 하지만 그가 정치적 현실 자체만을 중시하는 것은 아니다. 그는 예술과 문화라는 입장에서 우울한 정치적 상황을 바라본다. 이 소설에서 작가가 다양한 예술론을 펼쳐 보이고 있는 것도 이런 문맥에서이다. 이 소설에서 그가 샤갈의 예술세계에 깊은 관심을 보이는 것은 그가 궁핍하고 험난한 상황에서도 그것에 휩쓸리지 않고 꿈과 행복의 예술적 독자적 공간을 만들어낸 예술가이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Choi's Kubo(丘甫) grasps the modern character of Korean society in the situational changes of the World Powers around Korea in two ways; one is his view of the culturally barbarious state that traditional Korean humaneness and subjectivity are lost, overwhelmed by the West's material civilization, and the other is his view of the political state that the rights of a majority is ignored by the interest of a minority. Choi's Kubo(丘甫) does not see the negative character of the day what is limites only to the day, and however grasping it as a historical characteristic since the flowering time when modernization in Korea began, sees its cause to be in the loss of 'a spiritual root' and earthly desire influenced by the West's modern, material civilization. Choi's Kubo(丘甫) chooses free association of ideas and internal soliloquy as a method to depict the awareness of ideas and internal soliloquy as a method to depict the awareness of the realities of life; differently from what is used as a method of the subjective internalization of the realities of life in Park's ‘The Daily Life of A Novelist, Kubo(仇甫)’, free association of ideas and internal soliloquy are being used as methods of purposeconscious criticism and the expression of logic ideas. In the meantime, in Choi's ‘The Daily Life of A Novelist, Kubo(丘甫), both the parody technique and fantasy technique are used along with free association and internal soliloquy. The parody technique does not only affect the total structure and contents of the work but also it shows that Park's novelistic attitude towards the criticism of modernity is included in Choi's awareness of the issue. Also, Choi, as maintaining a critical distance about the original work along with his succession of the issue, shows his creative aspect. The fantasy technique is suggested in the forms of imagination or dreams, and in particular, dreams are applied to present Kubo(丘甫)'s critical sense or awareness against the society of the day and his sense of distance between real society and the ideal society dreamed by him.
