국문 초록

영화는 태생적으로 대중적 요소와 예술적 요소를 함께 지니고 있는 장르이다. 대중적 요소는 산업으로서의 콘텐츠적 특성과 연결되며, 결국 상업적 성공 여부와 결부된다. 영화 〈편지〉는 관객과 영화속 인물간의 상상적 동일시를 훌륭하게 달성하고 있어서, 대중적 성공을 거둔 작품이다. 황동규의 시는 이러한 상상적 동일시에 크게 기여하고 있다. 황동규의 시가 그런 힘을 지니게 된 것은, 첫째, 전통적 정서의 창조적 변용과정을 거치고 있다는 점, 둘째, 이 영화의 모티브인 시〈즐거운 편지〉가 이미 대중들에게 널리 알려져 있었으며, 황동규의 연애시가 연작시이기 때문에 서사화(敍事化)가 쉽고, 이에 따라 〈각색〉이 용이(容易)하다는 점, 셋째, 〈즐거운 편지〉의 문학적 성취가 뛰어나 대중영화인 〈편지〉의 예술적 효과를 강화시키고 있다는 점 때문이다. 영화 〈편지〉가 황동규의 시를 각색하는 과정에서 고려한 요소를 보면, 첫째, 시 〈즐거운 편지〉에서는 ‘그대’의 의미를 한용운의 ‘님’처럼 다양하게 해석할 수 있지만, 영화에서는 ‘사랑하는 연인’으로 한정한 점, 둘째, 스토리 라인을 ‘시련-행복’의 순환적 구조로 전개시켜 나가며, 그 끝에 ‘희망’의 메시지를 제시하고 있다는 점, 셋째, 나레이터를 시(詩)에서와는 달리 여성으로 제시하고 있다는 점, 넷째, 황동규의 연작시에 형상화되고 있는 화자의 정서와 식물적 이미지 등을 고려하여 남자주인공을 수목 연구원으로 제시하고 있으며, 남자주인공이 죽은 후 ‘나무’를 주인공의 화신(化身)으로 상정하고 있는 점, 다섯째, ‘깃발’이라는 시적 이미지를 ‘삶-죽음’을 암시하는 핵심 이미지로 변용한 점 등을 들 수 있다. 영화 속 시 〈즐거운 편지〉는 자칫 단조로운 멜로드라마가 될 수도 있었던 영화에 ‘사랑’의 실존적 의미를 덧입힘으로써 ‘사랑’에 대한 사유의 깊이를 확보하고 있다. 이러한 예는 영상매체인 영화와 문자매체인 시(詩)가 상호 공존할 수 있는 가능성을 열어주는 것이다. 영화 〈편지〉의 대중적 성공에 힘입어 황동규의 시집이 베스트셀러에 진입하기도 하였다는 사실은 많은 시사점을 준다. 시(詩)의 향유폭을 넓히고, 그 존재가치를 높이기 위해서는 시가 많이 읽혀져야 하는데, 영화 〈편지〉는 그러한 성과를 보여주는 중요한 시금석이 되는 작품이다.

영문 초록

Popularity and artistry are inseparable in movies. Popularity is related to movie content and eventually leads to commercial success in the industry. ‘Letter’ succeeded commercially as a consequence of causing the audience to empathize deeply with the movie’s characters. Hwang Donggyu’s poems are a similar effect. The following is a list of reasons why his poems have such great power. First, they exemplify the creative transformation process of traditional sentiment. Second, his series of poems in ‘Sweet letter,’ which was the source of inspiration for the movie ‘Letter,’ had nationwide popularity. A story line for a movie adaptation was easily extracted. Third, the literary fulfillment of ‘Sweet Letter’ seasoned the movie ‘Letter’ with an artistic effect. I would like to explain the elements of the adaptation process from Hwang Donggyu’s poems to the movie ‘Letter’ by examining it closely. First, ‘You (Guedae)’ in ‘Sweet letter’ can be interpreted variously as ‘You (Nim)’ in Han Yongun’s poem, but the meaning of you in the movie is limited to the idea of a loved one. Second, the story line was developed through a circular structure of agony and happiness, which suggests a message of ‘Hope’in the end. Third, the narrator of the movie, unlike that of his poem, is a woman. Fourth, the main male character is a botanist based on the narrator’s sentiment and his botanical image in Hwang Donggyu’s poems. Also, a tree was used to represent the male character after his death. Fifth, the poetic image of a flag was used as the core image of life and death. The film could have been a simple melodrama; instead, it showed the differences within the deep reasons for love by layering the existential meaning of love. These examples open the possibility that the medium of image and the medium of text can coexist in poetry. Hwang Donggyu’s poetry book became a best seller with the help of the success of the movie, ‘Letter’. There are implications for us. The poems should be read widely to lighten up the reasons of the existence of the poetry. ‘Letter’ is the touchstone of its possibility and success.
