영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to show that universal features or concepts exist in the underlying level of individual languages even when they show apparent distinctions in the surface representation. We deal with grammatical features such as restrictive vs. non-restrictive relative clauses, surface vs. volume, state vs. event, factive vs. non-factive, and contrastive vs. non-contrastive, We argue that those features are universal and exist in the underlying representation and that they are overtly or covertly realized in different ways in the surface level. This article not only provides a piece of evidence for the notion of Universal Grammar suggested by Chomsky, but a new model of teaching English grammar.
